Acupuncture Is Nonsense

My close friend has been suffering headaches for three years. She went to a doctor to get treatment. The doctor said there was nothing wrong. She was referred to a psychiatrist. Six months of problem spewing and the headaches were still going. The she went to an acupuncturist - the acupuncturist told her there was nothing wrong with her. She also went to him for about six months, paying exhorbiant rates each time. He kept telling her to think positively and that everything was normal but that she just needed to change her frame of mind. He had her head wired up to a machine (don't know what that has to do with acupuncture but thats what he did) and said all the brainwaves were normal.
    She had a fit yesterday.
She has a brain tumor and is in intensive care at the moment.
Now I am angry because the doctors did not diagnose her condition properly (she had not been for a CAT scan). I am angry with the psychiatrist because he should have seen the signs (and there are plenty), that this was not a psychological disorder. I am angry with the acupuncturist because he fed her a load of sh**te.
    F***K sake.
Somebody prove acupuncture to me as a form of demonstrable and testable treatment, and not just a means of taking advantage of vunerable people with f*ckin brain tumors. Please provide logical arguments.

tbh I'd be focussing my anger on the Doctor/psychiatrist if I was you.
Your friend only tried acupuncture because she felt she had no alternative i.e. Western medicine , which we all depend on , failed her.

Yeah I agree with Bullpost. The acupuncturist didn't set out to treat a brain tumour, they only got someone who had headaches a lot of the time coming into them.

If the acupuncturist knew it was a brain tumour when she was coming in then it'd be extremely irresponsible of them to treat them without referring them to a hospital.

The acupuncturist was right, she had no issue his skills could treat. How someone with a 6 month history of headaches never got screened for a brain tumour is beyond me.

But continued to treat & charge "exorbitant rates" for 6 months. If this story is true you can hardly let off the acupuncturist.

Anytime you feel like it you can drop into a place like Euromedic and get an MRI scan for €245.

sorry to hear about your friend, but I have to tell you that I know of two people that went to acupuncture and had amazing results.

One had MS and one had extreme excema.(sp?) Both are really well now and they had tried for years -without success - with western medication/doctors. Both are female and they both would be quite anti-western doctors now (saying they're too pharma-focused etc.,)

It's sad, but it's just one of those things. Hope ur friend gets well soon.

ps. was an optimologist involved? usually a trip to them gets a referral for scan...

on the basis that various medics had ruled out anything sinister?

Thanks for the replies. The fact that the doctors didn't do their jobs properly doesn't mean the acupuncturist shouldn't also do his job properly. Yes it is absolutley crazy that there was no scan - what makes me angry is that a doctor making a mistake is one thing, but someone making money from something that doesn't work or at least hasn't been proven to work is quite another.

If you had headaches would you not demand a ct scan? if they offered to refer me to a psychiatrist I would tell them where to shove it. But in fairness to the doctors not every headache=brain tumor. There are signs for spotting brain tumors such as pupil reaction, vision tests and the type/timing of headaches. What other signs did she have?

She shouldn't of relied on the acupuncturist. How much training do you think acupuncturist have in diagnosing brain tumors or anything else for that matter? I'm also sure they'll feel bad if they hear one of their clients are hospitalized too .

Anyway, good luck to your friend at least now she is diagnosed she can get the treatment she needs and can get on the road to recovery.
