    hi,

so recently got engaged and decided to go for a white gold engagement ring at the time, lighter, cheaper etc.

now im stressing, I dont know the quality of the gold, the replating etc! if I get a whitegold wedding band id have to do the same, would a platinum wedding band damage my white gold engagement ring? we put the money into the diamond over the setting at the time.

does anyone get different metals for engagement ring and wedding ring?!

My mum had a white gold engagement ring and a yellow gold wedding band. I don't think it matters tbh.

Best of luck by the way, and I hope you are both very happy!

I have an 18ct white gold engagement ring and a palladium wedding band. No problems whatsoever - was recommended by my jeweller. I think the general rule is - don't get a metal harder than the ring you have or it will wear the softer metal away over time. If you have 18ct gold - get either yellow 18ct, platinum or palladium of equal hardness.

A year and a half later and I'm still very happy with it. If yr worried, go in and have a chat with a proper jeweller and see what they have to say.

I have great things to say about palladium - shiney, hard wearing and looks the biz with the white gold!

(Also, the quality of the gold should be there for the jeweller to see in code inside the ring somewhere. He/she'll be able to tell you the quality very easily anyway if yr unsure)

Platinum and white gold are actually different colours/shades. So if you have an egagement ring where you can see a lot of the metal and you get a plain platinum wedding band, the difference in the colours will be noticeable.
Also, as someone mentioned, you shouldn't pair a hard metal with a soft one, and since platinum is harder than white gold, it would wear at the gold quicker. I'd imagine this would be especially true of white gold, as you'd have to get it redipped/replated more often.
However, I have also been told that if pairing gold with platinum, although it's not usually recommended, unless you physically sit and rub the two rings together, they wouldn't really actually wear that quickly as people like to suggest.
So I guess it's up to you if you want to take the risk, but best thing is to ask a jeweller, they will give you more detailed info on this.

How expensive is the re-plating? If it was under €50 a year I'd consider it to be worth getting the matching metal, considering the overall cost of the rings.

I get my two rings replated and polished just to keep them shiney and scratch free every year and costs about 75 a year. But I also get my diamond tightened too as it's a funny shape and gets a bit loose - so maybe that costs extra.

I have white gold rings. I'm not too sure about the cost of cleaning/re-plating here, but don't think it'd be too expensive, and you'd only need to get it done yearly.

I got mine in London where I'm from, so every other year when I'm over I take our rings into Hatton Garden and get them cleaned. Cost me £40 for the wedding rings, but nothing for the e-ring as we'd bought it in the same place. They are cleaned and returned in a couple of hours. Perhaps your jeweller might offer the service for free if you got the rings there?

I did enquire of Keane's in Cork about the cost of re-plating. Can't remember the cost, but the ring would be gone for a week which I wasn't keen on.

I'm doing the same thing. Most jewelers seem horrified at the idea of having two different colours, but it's what I want.

What about pairing a yellow gold wedding band (say 18c) with a platinum e-ring? The e-ring i have already. So need to decide on wedding band now.

Just picked up my 18k white gold engagement ring there last week and asked the jeweller (an old-school jeweller that I really trust) about this issue. I want a thin black metal band as my wedding ring. He basically said that any wear that happens won't be noticeable (at least on my ring) in my lifetime. I'm not overly bothered about it after I pop my clogs!

what type of wear was he referring to? Do you mean he said don't bother getting your white gold one redipped?
