    Hi all,

I have a big big fear of dentists but now I have to bite the bullet and get wisdom teeth removed. They have be at me on and off for years but due to bad experiences with a couple of dentists I am fearful of getting this done.

It is the bottom half wisdom teeth that need to be removed and I would say a bit of gum will have to be cut out aswell.

What is a rough guideline price for this work and also can anyone recommend a dentist around Laois to do this work that will understand my phobia?

    Thanking you all,
    Jonny

I paid 1600 for my lower two to be removed.

Dont worry about it, I understand its only specialists who perform these ops these days, so its a walk in the park :)

I received an aneasthetic through a tube in my hand and was in lala land until coming round in the recovery room. Little bit sore for a few days after but nothing over the counter painkillers cant handle.

I had all four out, was told theres no point only have the problem ones out, which were the same as yourself, the bottom two.

I had it done in hospital rather than the dentists, didn't fancy being awake for it. If you've health insurance to cover it all, I'd recommend going the same route.

At the time I was given choices:
1 - My regular dentist would do it.
2 - Some speciallist dentist who just does that kind of thing.
3 - The specialist would refer me to the hospital.

Nothing to fear... I have had no pain at the dentist for years - except when they extract cash from my wallet!

But to be fair I'd rather be in the dentist's chair than staying at home in pain.

    Hi OP,
not really suposed to be talking price on the forum...
if you are nervous and price conscious (like most people)- look into extraction under IV sedation. IV sedation works really well in these cases.

    All the best,

Far as I know, an extraction would have cost me €90-100 but this was two surgeries, blighters werent even exposed, which is why I was reffered to a clinic that specialises in them. Price didnt seem outlandish as I paid €800 for a rootcanal+crown a few years ago.

Well how did you get a wisdom tooth out for so cheap!

I'm not a dentist btw but that seems like the price for a standard extraction.

    Hi helimachoptor,

I don't know to be honest and I didn't question the price.
It was DEFINITELY a wisdom tooth as well.
It had been giving me trouble for years.
When they extracted it the roots of it were fused together as it had been blocked by my back tooth from coming up properly..nasty looking thing.
Anyway, thats what he charged and it was a fairly tricky extraction.

Talking to other people about the same thing and they are quoting 3 to 4 digits.

Can confirm the high price I'm afraid! Got a quote for e1,300 to extract one lower wisdom tooth a year ago. Couldn't afford it so didn't get it taken out. Had no probs with it since!!

A wisdom tooth can be as easy to extract as other teeth in some cases...
If the tooth is not impacted and has short, straight, conical roots- then it can be treated like other extractions and charged accordingly.

Most wisdom teeth that need removal are impacted in bone or against other teeth, are badly decayed, have big/ bulky or curved roots etc..
These need a surgical type of extraction with a cut in the gum, lifting the gum away from the tooth and bone and then some drilling of the bone and tooth to free it up, then stitches to close it up again... This is a surical procedure and again costs some more...

    What did you have?
    Thanks,
    OS

I have been on a crusade to kill this myth that wisdom tooth removal is prohibitively expensive for some time now...

€1300 for one tooth is madness.

Can you tell us if this was to be done under local anaesthetic, IV sedation or general anaesthetic? If under GA, the vast majority of that price goes to pay the hospital for the use of it's ward and theatres. If under LA or IV sedation, that is way too expensive for one tooth.

Had both upper wisdoms taken out a few years ago. Think the dentist said they were preventing a molar from coming up and pushing the incisors into each other, and they were not "impacted" as Oral Surgeon said. Each was done under local anaesthetic and cost a couple of hundred altogether.

Had a root canal too...my jaw and wallet (well parents at the time :D) were wrecked after it. Dentist did a great job tho

It was the IV in the hand one, not quite unconscious. Your other post reminded that the two teeth were "impacted".

    Hi O S,

The roots were really curved, had a few stitches in the gum afterwards.
I still have it around here somewhere.
I'll see can I find it.

But did you have the wisdom tooth drilled out? Was it done by a specialist or not?

No it wasn't drilled out OS.
Would it be common for a wisdom tooth to come up fully?

Sure, they come up fully sometimes.

    A wisdom tooth can be;

Fully unerupted and can't be seen in the mouth but can be seen on xray. These require bone removal etc...

Fully erupted into the mouth and not impacted by bone or adjacent teeth, these can be more straight forward to remove but still are in dense bone and require some work

Partially erupted or impacted. These are stuck in bone or against the adjacent teeth so require gum reflection, bone removal and/or tooth sectioning to remove it...

Sounds like you were in the second group and so €95 is a fair enough price for that...

    All the best,
    OS

i was awake for it, was able to drive home myself and am back in work today

Sorry this isnt about pricing, But a general question i got my Top left wisdom tooth out today at 11 and 12 hours later its still bleeding not to the extent that it was but i was just wondering if this is normal? The tooth took about 5 mins to get out as the dentist said the top ones are easy to get out its the bottom that can cause problems

Do you have any known bleeding conditions or take medications that cause bleeding ??
If not and the extraction was straight forward- roll up some gauze/ tissue/ kitchen roll, wet it under the tap, place it over the socket and apply pressure by biting on it for 20 minutes, repeat if necessary. If this does not control bleeding then you need further attention. It is normal to see some blood stained saliva etc...
