Other people need to have the app. Other than that it just uses wifi or your 3G internet connection to send the messages.

Check out viber also - when connected through wifi can make free calls.

I find sometimes that Whatsapp can be very unreliable but it's very handy at the same time. Once the other people are on Whatsapp and you don't rely on it for time critical stuff you'll be fine.

    Another vote here for Viber.

I've been using Viber in conjunction with an app called wifi keyboard - once installed on your phone wifi keyboard will give you the option of typing up your messages in a browser window on your PC and then sending them over your wireless network to the phone from where you can forward them on in the usual manner.

A long press on a text field will pop up a dialog from where you choose the input method - 'Android Keyboard' for typing on the phone or 'Wifi keyboard' for typing in the browser.

On the PC type in the IP address of your phone on your wireless network along with a port number of 7777 eg - http://192.168.1.xyz:7777/ - to access the web page, hit F4 to give focus to the text field in the browser, type your message, then F4 to send it back to the phone, and from there send as normal.

Very handy if you want to send longer messages.
