Headset Issue?

Ive had a RARN (Really Annoying Random Noise) on my bike for the last while. It started with a cracking sound when the front wheel hit a pothole and then escalated to a creak on left pedal stroke. Haven't done an internal exam but I finally managed to replicate the cracking/creaking sound when, off the bike, I lean weight into the left drop. No cracks visible in carbon frame or fork.

What could be the possible diagnosis + treatment? Sounds like headset surgery could be expensive down the LBS - is this something I could treat myself?

    Hey FF-

Did you ever find out what that cracking sound was? The exact same thing is happening with me atm and sometimes I feel like smashing my bike against the nearest wall. The noise happens at the bottom of the left pedal stroke. I don't think it's the drops, it still happens no handed, don't think it's the seat, happens when I'm standing up....let me know what conclusions you came to. Thanks.

You should open the headset and see if the handlebars are ok. A guy I was cycling with yesterday was explaining symptoms that sound like this and he discovered his handlebars were sheared throught centre ready to come apart only for the headset holding them in place. Was metal fatigue due to the torquing of the pull / push alternately over time.
