    Hey Boardsies

Right I wanted to know peoples opinions of the 1.9/2.0 Ltr TDI Golf MK5

Ive convinced the parents that I needed to buy a car for going to and from school, Mostly city driving.. I'll be insured under my dads policy on the car so insurance shouldnt be a problem as I have full licence :)

I really like the shape of the Golf and tbh even tho it is very basic looking on the inside I do like the look and the quality of a VW ... Has anyone ever had problems or reasons not to go after a TDI?

What should I expect to pay 5000+ or should i look more to the 7-8k market? Looking along the lines of something like this http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2513669

    Thanks for any responses!

You're the only one who can tell us what your budget is!

What kind of mileage will you be doing? The diesels will be more expensive, or have more miles than an equivalent petrol model.

If it's only city driving you'd be mad to buy a diesel, buy a 1.4 petrol, cheaper in every single way.

    +1 on the 1.4..

The wife has one.. great car and cheap to run/tax/insure... especially for city driving..

The golfs are a great car in every way, cheap parts and economical etc etc...
I would go for the 1.9 tdi model with the pd engine. Might have high miles tho but drive forever. Make sure it has a full service history. Good luck and keep us posted :)

Not 100% legally you won't if you're the main driver.

He'll need to own the car to have insurable interest in the car, to actually insure it. Even then, if he has his own policy on his own car, he won't be able to use his NCB for this one, so it won't be as cheap as you're expecting.

Also if you're the one mainly driving the car, you need to be insured as the main policy holder - otherwise you'll be screwed in the event of a crash and the insurance company goes digging.

I think the post was about the Golf, rather than the insurance, because I'm fairly sure, like everyone else, he's going to do it anyway.
