Any liquid spilt??? If not - get onto Apple if under warranty.
If there was liquid spilt check the indicators

Had same issue with 3GS - had to go insurance claim route.

    Is it under warranty decies?

If it is ring Apple, and pay the extra €29 to get your replacement first, before sending back faulty phone

OP, I know you have tried plugging in and out headphones but do this at least 20 times in a row...

If that doesnt work, and solution thar worked on my wife's iPhone 4, set the alarm clock, let it go off, then do soft reset...

Had this happen to me, my solution does sound odd but worked for me. Put your mouth over the speaker and suck. Sometimes the speaker membrane gets clogged with dirt

This happened to me a couple of weeks ago.

I put the hairdryer to it for a couple of minutes and it fixed it.

The freezer, blowing and headphones solutions didnt work for me.
