    Hi all,

Just wondering if anybody could tell me rough prices of the bus journeys in South America, having some trouble getting the info online.
Specifically the ones I'm looking to get are:
    Sao Paulo to Rio
    Rio to Iguazu Falls
    Iguazu to Buenes Aires

    Thanks a mill!

It might be worth a try to check out TAM Airways,it could well be cheaper to fly from sao paulo to rio. Dont forget, there are 2 airports in Sao Paulo, 1 does all the domestic flights. on a quiet day(sunday) they would be 40mins apart, during the week...... its anyones guess.

Rio to sao paulo by bus could take around 9 hrs ive just been informed:confused:

    cant help much further.......

i'll second what user friendly said, the planes can actually be a lot cheaper than the buses over there and obviously a fraction of the travel time. check out the LAN website and if you take the early flights then you can get pretty cheap flights. we flew buenos aires to iguazu and onto rio and it wasn't that expensive. not sure of the exact cost as we had a multi-city trip but don't think it was more than a couple of hundred dollars.

Rio to Iguazu would be a mammoth bus trip - over 24 hours id imagine. We took the bus from Florianopolis to iguazu and it was about 14 hours. Not expensive though...about 20 odd euro and comfortable.
Iguazu to BA is longer...about 18 hours and about 40 euro if i remember correctly. If you book early you can get a sleeper bus which amazing.

The buses are dirt cheap. Usually around 50 euro for an 18 hour trip. In Chile I took a 25 hour journey from Valparaiso to San Pedro de Atacama and it cost me about 40 euro I think.

Semi-Cama is cheaper than Cama, but the chairs recline very far back anyway so it is easy enough to sleep on the buses.

Nobody does bus journeys as well as the South Americans.

Ha Ha, I second this. After spending 9 months in South America and travelling only by bus, imagine my surprise when I got bus eireann home from the airport. No movies, toilets, bingo, people getting on at each stop selling sweets, fish or chicken! And no air-con that would freeze any extremities you were foolish enough to leave exposed.

check out omnilineas and search from buenos aires to igazu and you'll get the names of the companies that go and then you can individually check the prices.

Cama is worth the extra because it can take longer than expected. the time i did it the policia stopped and searched the bus and passports etc 6 different times! it was agony!

I can give you some info Iguazu to Buenos Aires. It'll take you about 17-20 hours, depending. It'll cost you roughly 72 for the semi cama and 82 for the cama. It will be an overnighter.

I personally would recommend the cama for this trip. While in South America my rule of thumb was for an overnighter, 12 hours or more I got myself a cam. It's about a tenner more and so comfortable. The seats recline back a ridiculous amount and you get a nice hot dinner around 10 and plenty of snacks.

There will be plenty of decent films, usually in English with Spanish subtitles or the other way around. I went with Via Bariloche and the service was excellent. The glass of whiskey you get around 11 is sensational! Andesmar are excellent as well, Crucero del Norte also good.

Thanks a lot for all the info guys much appreciated!
As regards booking the buses, is this all done at the stations when we get there or should I be looking into booking online or anything?

The easiest way is to go to the bus station. All the different companies have their own desk with their destinations written up. Just ask all the ones that say they go wherever you need to go and you can compare prices.

For busier routes you might be safer to go a day before, or in the morning for a night bus, to make sure you get a seat.

Do it at the stations, but buy your ticket the day before (or when you arrive in the station). The buses are very comfortable in Brazil, but frmo Iguazu - BA, get the nicest you can and you won't believe the comfort. You'll get a steak dinner!!! The buses in general are wonderfully comfortable.

Ask if the movies are in english or with subtitles. Many have and it's great to while away a bit of the time. We bussed all over SA and loved it. Longest trip was Calafate - Puerto Madryn via Rio Gallegos. 30 hours. I've felt worse after a 3 hour bus journey at home on a Bus Eireann hape of sh*te.

    ALSO!!!!

Book seats downstairs if you can. Less people, less human traffic and less movement from the bus (if you want to sleep). Only downside is you're near the toilet but they're normally clean and it's no big deal.

Check out the buses as you get to the station. Some will be shiny and new looking, some shabby. Ask if it's a new bus.

Two of the best companies in Argentina with international connections
    www.flechabus.com.ar
    www.nuevachevalier.com

The very best seats are called suite so you can have semi cama, cama and suite.the latter is the most expensive but you will always get a meal includeing wine and will sleep like a baby. Its cheaper than any hotel
