Win7 on my machine?

Having had my main HDD fail I'm looking at getting an SSD replacement for it.
I'm still using XP but I'm reading online that Win 7 is a lot better for the SSD than XP.
My spec is pretty old S939 DFI Lanparty NF4-SLI-DR with an AMD 64 X2 4200+ CPU and 2gb RAM. Computer isn't using for gaming at all. Would it be usable for Win7 with the SSD or would it still be crippled?
    Thoughts?

And well it would. I'm running windows 7 ultimate on a crappy old netbook. In saying that the netbook has 2gb. It kinda does need the 2gb alright.

So do you reckon it would be worth my while going for Win 7 + SSD (€140ish for the two) or just spending €40 for a small SATA HDD for a fresh XP install?

with XP if you have plenty of ram (>768 ) then disable the windows swap file to stop XP actively swapping out stuff too soon

use taskmgr to check your peak ram usage (ok try on a different machine to see how much XP really uses)

Thanks for the comment but are you saying I should go for win7 or wait till I can afford to upgrade properly?

Neither just pointing out that if you have 2GB of RAM then the biggest speed boost you can give to XP is to turn OFF the swap/pagefile

It depends on what you use the laptop for. If you are mainly browsing then your choice of browser may be more important than your choice of OS.

I miss EFS that's in windows XP Pro but not in Windows 7 "premium"

Windows 7 IS much faster than Vista (unless you tweak vista a lot)
but isn't really that much faster than XP on older hardware (netbooks are older hardware in the sense that they use less powerful kit)

I just can't see Windows 7 performing miracles on the shared video card memory on a netbook
