It would be classed as carry on luggage, best thing to do is try put the laptop into your carry on bag

Never had issues with them taking a small suitcase and laptop bag on.

You may never have had an issue but they are entitled to enforce the rule making the laptop the 2nd piece of hand luggage and have done.
It all depends on the day,so I'd still recommend putting the laptop inside your one piece of hand luggage.

I did, but it was a camera case instead of a laptop, guess it just depends on the person there and then

Just had a look at their website and it says, amongst other things
    • Baggage is restricted to one piece per passenger
    • Additional small items (camera, personal stereo, overcoat, handbag or laptop) are allowed.

It will probably depend on the size of your laptop bag.

    here's what Aer Lingus says:
    http://www.aerlingus.com/help/help/baggageinformation/#d.en.1215

Baggage is restricted to one piece per passenger.
    The maximum dimensions for a cabin bag are: 55cm x 40cm x 20cm or 22in x 16in x 8in.
Baggage must weigh under 10 kgs/22lbs and be small enough to fit in overhead bins or under your seat.
    These limits are strictly enforced.
Additional small items (camera, personal stereo, overcoat, handbag or laptop) are allowed.

So you can bring on a carryon bag AND a laptop.

I fly about twice a month with a carryon roller case and a briefcase and Aer Lingus has never given me any hassle.

FYI, Ryanair is different. One piece means one piece. I've seen passengers get irate when boarding in Dublin when the Ryanair staff tell them they've to pay for their carryon bag as their carryon bag + duty free/WH Smith bag counts as 2 items of hand luggage...

Wow thanks for the information guys been such a help. Do Aer lingus enforce the dimension aspect of their carry on luggage? my carry on bag isn't huge but it is over the dimensions.

In my experience, it depends on the airport. In Dublin, you can checkin online or using a machine and nobody looks at your bag until you're at the gate, by which time the EI staff are just more interested in getting people onto the plane...
However, in some of the French airports I've been through on holidays, where EI flights are handled by an outsourced ground handling company, at various times I've had to (1)move stuff from my carryon into my checkin bag because the checkin agent has spotted by carryon looks a bit (1-2kg) heavy, and (2)move stuff from my checked-in bag to my wife's as I've been 1.5kg overweight.
Which is anal and really annoying, but rules are rules and all that...

So in summary- you'll be grand on the way out, but you could fall foul to some dragon of a checkin agent on the way back. Have a good trip.:)
