New Laptop (Dell)

Basically me and my family have bought from Dell for many years. Was looking at an XPS laptop and was deciding between the 15 or 17.

Ill be mostly using it for some gaming (starcraft) to video rendering on Vegas. Not a big HD movie watcher but will watch dvds etc. The bulkyness of the XPS doesnt really put me off either.

The set up that I currently am leaning towards is this:

    XPS 17 (17.3 inch, 1600 x 900)

    2nd generation Intel® Core™ i7-2630QM processor 2.00 GHz with Turbo Boost 2.0 up to 2.90 GHz, English Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium (64 BIT), 6GB, 500GB 7,200rpm, 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 550m.

Included in that is the 10% off dell coupon and other things they throw in.

    779euro

I havent had to look for a new laptop in ages as Ive had a desktop so Im wondering for what I need it for is it a decent price? or would there be another laptop with similar specs I should look at cheers.

If going for the XPS the 1080p (RGLED) screen upgrade is a must.
The stock screen of the 15 and 17 are among the worst laptop screens I have seen...terrible viewing angles, washed out colours and viewable LED matrix. It really ruins video experience.
However the 1080p upgrade is one of the best screens around and really is the stand out factor against similar models (like the acer ethos, Asus N-series, HP envy etc)

Other then that it is a very solid choice for a multimedia laptop, with enough performance for a moderate gamer.

Ive heard that the viewing angle is not great, that said the upgrade costs 337euro which kind of destroys my budget of about 800 euro :( While in a comparision between the standard screen and 1080p screen there may be a noticeable difference but would it be noticable from my perspective of just using standard 1280 x 800 laptops if you get me?

The jump in price really is too great even though I would like to :o

I've got the 17" XOS with the RGBLED. It really is a gorgeous screen. Only gripe I have is that the battery doesn't last long (max of hour and a half). Still seeing as it's pretty heavy anyway that's not a major deal as you won't exactly be carting it around in your bag. Plus I have the older model with the 1st generation i7.

The 15.6" Asus N53 is 780 on Komplett at the moment, fairly similar to the XPS in specs..

Have never seen one in the flesh but I just wonder if 1920 x 1080 is too high a resolution for a 15" laptop?

There is a very similar 17" for only 20 euro more, but it is listed as out of stock with no indication of if or when it might be back :(.

I have a first generation XPS 15. It's served me brilliantly for the last 8 months or so..in saying the 1900x1080 screen is an easy choice. It's brilliant deffo worth the extra..the resolution is great sometimes text can be a little small but zoom is your friend..also there's nothing like watching 1080p blu-rays on the move with excellent sound to boot..tho I'll say it again getting this laptop without the 1080p screen is like getting an inflatable dartboard..pointless
