    Hi,
I have my eye on a kitchenaid mixer from the U.S on ebay.
It is 110v, is this ok to buy?
I assume I need a convertor or something?
By buying in the states I am saving around 100 euro, just want to make sure its worth the hassle.
    Cheers.

By the time you get an adequate power supply for 110v for anything but the smallest items, it would probably be better getting the item here, or on amazon in the uk.

cheers mate, yeah I see that now.
I wasn't sure how they were priced but it seems the higher the power the pricier they are.
I think I will just buy the mixer over here.
    Cheers.

    Cheers for the replies.

be careful buying things in the us from ebay, you will get hammered with duty and vat and most of the time will work out to be more expensive. It's not really worth the hassle unless you are saving at least 50%. check the wattage but i'd say it will be fairly high so it will cost at least 50 euro for a transformer plus the transformer is going to be big and ugly.

Would be doing well to get a 110v transformer for that price that will power the item in question as well probably.

Items below €150 i think it is, are exempt from import duty, but have to pay VAT on it.

You are correct on the 150 euro, but poster says they will be saving 100 euro on a 400 euro item so duty and vat will be expensive, so say item is even half price at 200 euro then vat alone will be 42 euro, i don't know the duty rate but i'd say your 100 euro savings will be gone even before you buy a transformer. I bought a 150 watt one for 35 euro but that was only good for small charges. you'll need something like this but they are procey

Well i had already said it is not worth her while, so when i mentioned 150 euro as the upper limit, that was to further show its not worth while, not to say the OP would be exempt.

If the mixer was 200 watt, its likely at least a 300 watt transformer would be needed for the power factor etc, to avoid overloading it.

The item would want to be less than half price to make it worth while. Some electronic circuits may not work well in 50 hz when designed for 60 either, although a food processor might be ok.

A 110v bulb of equal wattage to the mixer, connected in series with it on the 230v would work somewhat:eek:

    As an experiment only:)

Thanks again for the replies folks.
I think I am pissing against the wind on this one.
Will have to bite the bullet and buy it over here.
Might grab it in a sale or something.
400 for a food mixer, never thought i'd see the day.
If it keeps the missus happy though its worth every penny.
    cheers again.

Or a 230v item 4 times the wattage of the mixer, in series with it would work also.:D
