I am possibly going to Southern Africa in December.

Anybody flown one way into Namibia? is it necessary to have a return flight?

I was planning on flying direct there with no return to europe and then figuring out where I would be to get my ticket back.

Do they check return tickets, do you even have to have one. I know in most cases a return from Johannesburg or something would be suitable but I won't (not planning on it) have one of them.

    Anybody know anything?

Thanks in advance for the help I know I will get :)

    Adrian

I've never been to Namibia, but in general, it is a problem to get 1 way flights to African countries. Many countries will charge the airline if they sell you a 1-way flight, but then have to deport you - the fine can be as much as $5,000. I encountered this when I got a 1-way ticket to Senegal - when I didn't show a Senegalese passport or entry visa at the airport, they didn't want to let me on the flight. So, even if you can find cheap single tickets (which is often a difficult task in itself), you might encounter further problems.

Amazing the lack of replies :) I know Namibia is a bit out of the way but the irish end up going everywhere.

I found out pretty much what you are saying from elsewhere and apparently Windhoek airport officials are the worst and Air Berlin, the only company flying there won't take you even with a return from Jo'burg. (otherwise acceptable).

Thanks anyway but it looks like the best option is just to pay a fortune for a fully refundable return leg and then get it refunded.

I've flown to Namibia one way, but from Johannesburg, with Air Namibia. That definitely wasn't a problem because we were spending some time travelling around Namibia before getting a bus to Cape Town. But I don't know about these persnickity German airlines.

I remember starting my job in Lesotho and Lufthansa had a small issue with my ticket being one way, but I had with me my documentation showing that I was going to live there. He hummed and hawed and eventually let me on my connecting flight in Frankfurt.

If you're going to travel around southern Africa and have a date for flying home from somewhere else, then you might be alright as you can prove you're leaving Namibia and then you're someone else's problem. Why not just ring up the airline and find a way to make it OK, because I'm sure there's a way.
