I got a short-term contract which has just finished after 2.5 years of searching...

I had the 'pleasure' of dealing with our friends in Welfare this morning *sigh*. Just hope it won't be too long before I can get something else....

Yep, offered a job this week and have 2 other first round interviews available over the next 5 days. In a full time permanent position at the moment. I'm extremely luck that my sector is flying at the moment and there is a shortage of personnel out there.

No there are no jobs. I'm in a soul destroying low paid position at the moment and have been searching for a proper job that can support my family the last six months with no luck. Two interviews from 300+ C.V's sent out and no joy. Have given in and we are moving to Toronto in the next few weeks after finding work through a friend.:)

    Best of luck with this!

IT sector doesn't seem to be too bad, my mate's company went under and 3 days later he had another job. And I'm getting offered alot of jobs the last while too.

Getting interviews, just waiting to land one. I was traveling the last year so not sure HR people love that when they look at my cv. It is my mission to land a job in the next 4 weeks

Yes, things in Galway have got a lot better over the last 6 months.

Still far from what it was, but better.

IT is certainly quite strong at the moment.

Yes there is, I was offered a job recently in my field, I have been looking for over 10 months, but have been in a job during this time. Perseverance is the key and you have to network not just apply for jobs, you need to be different from the other person and by people knowing you it gives you an edge.

I'm in the charity sector. There are some jobs. I'm not getting any. There are lots of unpaid internships. Before someone says, I'm already volunteering somewhere. It's really getting me worried. Am doing an 'Employment Preparation Course' to fix what I'm doing wrong. But the problem isn't so much me as The World.

Just had to turn down a job, oddly enough i felt bad. Now i am starting to wonder did i make the right decision.

What don't people who are getting offers/jobs say what field they are in and what role it is?

So strong that the last four people I've placed in jobs were not Irish- I had to persuade them to come up here from Poland, Italy & Spain. For some positions there is a complete lack of Irish talent in comparison to the opportunities available.

    @ Salonfire

Got a job after a week of coming out of college - not what I studied though (customer service contracted by the government)

    - Got a promotion in my current job

    - Had 4 interviews in the field I did study - IT related

I think things are improving that if you have any experience then you have a good chance.

I hope so, good to know that some of us are having some success in finding work at such an economic downfall. Gives some hope for the rest of us! Fingers crossed eh....!

Trying my hardest, getting to a few scattered interviews, I'm in the field of science and as a recent graduate, I'm finding it hard to get into contact with people in that area though.

So any tips would be awesome!

Where?? Because in Cork there sure ain't!!

My husband's been looking solidly for work the past two and a half years, and there's ZILCH out there. He's re-trained, got his certs up to date, rings round the agencies, and applies for every job that remotely fits his skill set. He hasn't even been graced with a PFO, never mind an interview!!

Know a chef, two lads (pretty high up) in finance and an experienced business manager who got sorted recently, all pretty quick and in what they say are decent roles.

Do you mind me asking what talent your looking for new, old ? Cause I have just finished college I done the CCNA course (various other modules in the course too) and I can't find nothing as the experience required is 3,4 and 5 years most of the time.

I have also e-mailed data centre operators and various IT firms asking if they needed, basically a guy in IT on minimum wage just so I could get the experience, I would put cat5e into computers all day long if that's how you build up experience.

After one year of getting no where, I am going into a completely different area, Retail Management. I have given up on IT and I swear it breaks my heart as I love computers, the data network, the various protocols interacting with each other to get a job done and at the end of it is some guy mainly downloading a load of crap or using facebook or hotmail!

The data centre I work in has hired 3 entry level positions in the last few weeks, far from minimum wage aswell

I know how you feel. But maybe you might be interested in programming? There are plenty of jobs out there in this area. They can't fill the positions apparently!

Can't fill positions for experienced people; the more junior developer positions aren't too hard to fill at the moment.

Medical device sector is certainly booming atm, i was only meant to stay on for a summer last year, but they have kept me on ever since. Good pay too, and i got a job promotion in the company recently. Company have hired a couple of hundred in the last few weeks, and still continuing....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,554 ✭✭✭donkey balls

There is work out there in the transport sector if you want to work for peanuts and take a sh*tload of responsibilty,I myself have turned down about four jobs due to the crap wage being offered but have managed to get into a niche market that's within the industry covering holidays&sickness but the company name and in house training that I got will stand to me if and when a full time position comes up either with them or a competitor.:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,293 ✭✭✭Dinkie

+1 for medical devices / technology companies.

Regularly get contacted via linked in for jobs in the medical devices sector and OH has just got an engineering job in the technology sector :)

got let go the start of the summer, had an interview in May'ish a week or two after with an electronics workshop, few days later, got the usual, "sorry you didn't get the job, competition was fierce, keeping cv on file" etc... type e-mail ...

summer on the dole, then 2 weeks back company ring me up and offer me a job, been there since, nice !

Getting approached on a fortnightly basis by recruiters at the moment for IT pre-sales roles. Doing that at the moment and would honestly prefer to go stick with the SQL development side of my job but it appears the world values the ability to sell a service higher than it values the ability to actually perform the work!

I was at a talk by Paul Rellis (MD of Microsoft Ireland) on Thursday
He stated that suppliers and partners of MS in Ireland currently employ 11,000 people and have 800 job opening they cannot fill right now.
He also mentioned one of these partners just relocated to the continent 600 jobs because they could not fill them here in Ireland.

These would all be in IT sector most high end -related mainly to Cloud Computing

It amazes me really they will employ so many people somewhere else but not in Ireland just cause of the wages?!

There isn't much to Cloud Computing to be honest its just a buzz area in IT at the moment but still wouldn't class as strictly IT its more of a business area really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,263 ✭✭✭✭Eoin

It sounds more like they tried to fill the roles but couldn't, rather than choosing to fill them elsewhere. There's most definitely a demand for experienced IT staff at the moment.

I would take statement this with a pinch of salt, I work for one of the suppliers and MS are driving suppliers hard with their pricing. So much so we are FORCED to locate these roles outside the country or we not competitive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,428 ✭✭✭MysticalRain

I could be missing something. But I haven't even seen one Microsoft jobs advertised recently. Nevermind 800 of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,337 ✭✭✭Bandana boy

The 800 jobs are with Suppliers and partners of MS not in MS

That said I have seen a couple of MS roles being hired in the last month.

Re the jobs moved to Europe you would need to be closer to it than I am to state one way or another the decision to locate to Europe ,but Paul definitely insinuated that it was they could not fill the positions in Ireland
