Posting on behalf of a friend who walks her beautiful 10month old Lab with my 2. Her hubby has just lost his job and they can no longer afford the RC puppy food they were feeding Bobby on and rehoming him just for the sake of cost cutting is not an option, she was wondering if there is a cheaper option puppy food. As he's nearly a year old and the vet said adult food wouldn't hurt him she'd tried aldi food but it really doesn't agree with him.

Anybody any suggestions as to what she can feed him.

I'm no use to her as my 2 are on Hills so hardly cheap food.

Whats her budget? If we know what she has to spend on a bag of food we can recommend something.

Not much point in recommending something for 40 when her budget might only be 20.:)

Lol sorry brain not working Andreac think its a bit soggy after walking mutts.

She was hoping to be able to half the bill so i'd say around €25 but i'm not sure what RC costs?

Maybe something like Redmills Leader? Im not sure how good a quality you are going to get for €25 so the meat content might not be great.

Maybe someone else might have a suggestion of a good enough food for that price?

was going to say whites but that is €39. the only thing though its good quality, and theres less poo to clean up. because its good quality id say you would feed less than cheaper brands so in the long run would work out cheaper. with one dog it would last awhile

Thanks both, I'll put these to her this afternoon. Such a shame as this dog is spoilt rotten new toys everyweek obedience classes socialisation classes and loads off attention, really is part of the family so they feel bad not being able to give it the best anymore.

Hi, might be worth checking this site out

    http://www.zooplus.ie/shop/dogs/dry_dog_food

They often do deals on items, but two get one free, buy two and get discount etc. and there is no delivery charge for purchases over €29 as far as I am aware. Worth checking out anyway, they are usually cheaper than the supermarket/vets even without the added discounts.

If your friend does decide to switch to a different type of food, she should mix it in with some of the old food for the first three days so that the dog can get used to it. Also. please be aware that some dogs foods contain more fat/carbs than other brands, so read the pack to ensure you are not feeding the dog too much/too little of the new food.

    Hope this helps!

Op I fed my lab pup's on Gain Big dog puppy, it's €25 a bag. Moved on to the Bid dog adult now. Have no problems with it.

The ordinary Red Mills in the red bag perhaps, if she has to go really cheap then Wagg is an ok food. As a last resort (after cutting our own food bills etc. as much as possible) we've had to resort to mixinv Wagg with Burns.
So she could perhaps do that even get a small bag of RC now and then and mix it in with another brand.
If there is a bit of meat left or now and then I buy cheap cuts (dogs like stewing beef nice n chewy with lots of meat on it) and cook the cheap cuts of for them and mix it in.

They're doing fine on it, it's not ideal but might not be forever, just to get us all by until things pick up.

If you're friend has storage space buying in bulk from zooplus might be another option, maybe buying a middle of the range food. There's so many options on zooplus it might be worth checking out as well.
