Have a budget of 2k. Looking for a small car to get me around. What can I realistically expect to get for 2 k?

Am I off my head to think I can get a good car with NCT and whatnot ? And whats the do's and dont's of buying a car private ? I know nowt about cars and am going on the assumption that a car for less than 2k that looks in good nic and has NCT is ok.

You'll get a nicely decent starter car for that money.

Have a look at 1.0/1.2L VW Polo, 1.25L Ford Fiesta, even a MkIII Golf 1.4 if the insurance is cheap enough.

    Polo

Golf (higher mileage for the money, lower years)

Take about 30% off the prices if you buy privately.

27 male first time and will be on learners permit. Insurance on a 1.4 might be a bit steep ya think ?

That 99 black VW Golf you linked to has supposedly had 8(!) owners... alarm bells ringing here!!

Not too keen on the Golf and I'll be crucified on insurance anyway. Think I'll be sticking to 1 or 1.2 L types. What would be the best of the Yaris/Fiesta/Micra type cars ? Lookin for reliability and comfort now over performance. As long as its decent I'm happy, doesnt need to be turbo charged or anythin.

At age 27, not so sure. Over 25 is a key demographic for reducing insurance.

A mate of mine is 22, first timer with a learner permit and paid €1,400 on a 1.25L fiesta. I'd expect about the same or less for yourself on a 1.4-1.6 :)

Edit: www.nononsense.ie - FBD by proxy - quoting for you on a 1.4L. Quote for age 22 is nearly €600 more, gauging by that you could probably do a bit cheaper than the below, he used Chill insurance brokers.
    Third Party, Fire and Theft
Provides cover for fire damage or theft of your car. Info
    Premium €1,203.05

Didn't see the 8 owners - definately avoid - tbh just giving examples, there are zillions of cars out there atm.

Interesting. What way does this named driver thing work ? Could I get someone who is already insured on another car to insure mine and stick my name on it and save myself a packet ?

And I assume that if I can get insured for 1,200 on a 1.4 insurance on a 1 or 1.2 would be considerably cheaper ?

I would have to throw my vote in for a Fiat Panda. Great little car, comfortable, reliable (yes they are!) and much more fun than you'd think from a 1.2 and very cheap to run and maintain.

Added a smiley face to diffuse the situation. Last thing I want is to get beat up on the internet, least of all in my own thread. :pac:

Interesting. Anyone else agree with this Panda business ? Doesnt look great but if its cheap, comfortable and reliable I dont think the looks would bother me too much.

Its a misconception to think that a 1.4 would be more heavily loaded compared to a 1.0/1.2. It all depends on the car type in question and the risk associated with it. Such minor differences in engine size will most likely make very little difference tbh, especially at 27.

Get a shortlist of cars and ring a few brokers to compare the differences.

I got my Mrs a little Daewoo Lanos.

1L petrol. For some reason it was thirsty enough, but bought it for €1100 and after a year and a half, I sold it for €900.

Ok little car, cost little money to buy, sold it for good money, good investment.

When the wife passed her test, she got the mondeo and the lanos went.

Aren't paddy spec Pandas all 1.1?

I like the Panda, I have a 500 which the same car underneath. Maybe the new Panda will be next as my kids get bigger.

Seen an Opel Astra today, 2002 115k miles. Possibly get it for 16/1700. Seeing as I might have to get insured as a named driver I can branch out a bit to the 1.4 category.

Whats your opinions on the Astra ?
And what would the cost be as regards fuel consumption? If I spend 30 a week on a 1.1 or 1.2 what would I expect to spend on a 1.4 ?
