I bought a David Brown 995 a few weeks ago and the battery is not charging,I got battery tested and was told it was ok, replaced + & - cables to battery, fitted new Alt, battery V not above 12.10V while running, should be 13+V.. Anyone have advice for my next step to avoid having to jump start her all the tme?????????

First, make sure the charge lead from the alternator is connected to the battery - probably via the starter.

Secondly, do you have a charge light when you turn the ignition on? does it go out when the engine runs?

PS 12.1 Volts is 80% flat in terms of battery charge.

rev it up and see does it charge then rather than just at idle. We have a renault and it was doing the same. Wouldn't even jump start off the John Deere. After re-doing some of the wiring it was an improvement but discovered that the charge lamp was blown. however when we give it a good rev up its starts to charge and continues to do so when returned to idle. I know its not really a fix but its a cheap one till we get time to go at it again :)

    Fishtits is correct.
Turn on the ignition, the pilot light for the alternater should turn on. If not investigate why, These bulbs can blow, Check the wiring is correct,(google the wiring diagram for an alternater) , check all connections. A probe/lightbulb or multimeter can be handy for this.
If the wiring and the connections are ok, then it is probably the alternater.
If you get/borrow a good alternater, hook up the wires and ground the alternater body off the machine and the pilot light lights up , the problem is the alternater , which will need to be replaced or reconditioned.

If the pilot light is on and you start the machine, the light should turn off. If it doesn't turn off, rev the tractor or cross the two wires at the back of the light. When the light turns off it should be charging, The voltage should be approx 13.8v.

Ive seen alternaters to give out 18/19v , If this happens the voltage regulator in the alternater is probably goosed . Not a good idea to run the tractor like this , the battery can boil.

Yes as others have said, first if you dont have a battery warning light on, you are p*****g in the wind.because this aswell as giving a warning it actually switches the alternator on.If you dont have a light on, take the small wire thats connected to the light off the alternator and touch it to earth. If it lights up then there is a fault in the alternator. If it still dont light then may be a blown bulb or bad connection in the wire.

No its not normal.Check again the other small wire to make sure the light on the dash is coming on with this wire connected, and going off with it disconnected.
Check to see that you are getting 12v on the large wire with the engine off, ( and wire connected obviously).

I don't what brand of alternator you have but on some it's easy to mistake the tacho feed terminal (will be marked with W) for the charge light terminal.

As far as i know its a Lucas 2003 Alternator, i am starting to wonder now is this the correct type for a 995, no W marked on it, it was a 2003 that came out of her when i changed it, but maybe the Guy i bought tractor fitted wrong type and had battery charged when he sold Tractor to me, as the problem started the day after i bought it..

The warning light terminal on the alternator can also be marked "IND".How is it behaving?

    Any like this?
