Hi , I friend of mine has a 2003 318i that needs the catalytic converter replaced . She was quoted €1500 from a BMW main dealer to replace this  , Im just wondering what would the going rate (roughly) for this to be done at an indy bmw mech ? as this sounds like mad money , Thanks

In fairness that sounds about right u could always buy a second hand one for mayb 150 euro and then factor in labour which is max 45mins have fitted afew very straight forword or your other option buy a brand new universel cat and have it welded in but i think u might be looking about 800 to 900 euro for that option

I'd definitely go the second hand route, the spurious/generic replacement option usually results in tears.

That is mad money for a replacement part, any indy garage should be able to replace the part for about 2 hours labour. try this replacement part http://www.cats2u.co.uk/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=BMW%20318i%202.0%20Petro

or use the internet to search for other suppliers
