.....the evenings are closing in and it's getting darker earlier and earlier every day.

I've already began to spot the one eyed willies roaming the roads so in the interest of safety could people please take 5 minutes over the next few days and check their lights and those of a family member who is too lazy to do it themselves.

And while your at it check the thread depths and clean the inside and outside of your windows to help remove the grim which the low sun reflects off.

5 minutes will improve road safety for everyone this year.

And remember, if you want winter tyres order them now.

The British MET office has warned of a longer, colder winter than last year to affect Ireland and Britain with frost and snow from mid October onwards.

Add to that make sure all the equipment is there to change the wheel including the wheel nut cap remover for alloys if fitted

How do you get the inside of your windscreen perfect to not show those very irritating streaks and the likes ?

the spray used to clean my dash accidentally hit the windscreen and had to be wiped off but it shines against me and all now

very annoying and would like to get rid of it please

also another one is to keep sunglasses in the car even in winter.... low lying sun and all that :)

Things I have found most useful that might not be obvious:

Blanket.. to kneel on if you need to change a wheel - why wreck a suit?
work gloves - for the same reason as above.
Bottle (2 litre) of water for when even the screen wash can't cope with the freezing temps. I wrap the water bottle in the blanket.

Could you not get done for carrying one of them in the car?

I know Confab said Oat bars but you need to stress food really.

Got stuck for three hours once and was marvin. Crisps and a few Yorkie bars (manly men bars) in the glove box are a good idea.

Also your favourite Mariah Carey CD is always good to have to hand

I met a cop car at 19.45 PM this evening with not a stitch of a light on. I thought about taking a pic but he would see the flash because it was so dark..

A book does just as well. Think I'll upgrade my water supply and throw in a few Yorkies and bog rolls, good ideas. I have a spare SIM, but a spare phone with €10 credit wouldn't go amiss.

Yeah I know, I'm way too paranoid considering the furthest away I'll get from civilisation in the snow is Balbriggan!

One thing you haven't got is a foot long piece of wooden board in case you have to jack the car on soft ground.

I've found mine useful on a number of occasions

Strong duct tape + bottle of water = emergency radiator pipe repair kit

    (duct tape is fairly waterproof)
