I Phone 3GS issue

I have an IPhone 3GS for the last 14 months.

I am having issues lately that i think are battery related.

I could be using an app or on the web and the whole unit suddenly powers down, even if the battery is at 80%.

I need to do a full reset (home button and power button) to get it back up. Most of the time the phone resets with the apple logo etc but with no requirement to enter my pin to access 3G network.

other times the phone powers down and then shows zero charge via the large battery charge requirement icon and when i can charge and finally power on i have to put in my pin number to access the 3G network.

the think seems to have a mind of its own.

Any idea what the issue could be?

    Thanks

If the phone is powering down then back up again without asking for the PIN, then that's effectively the OS crashing. It's happened to me a couple of times, but it's not a common thing.

First thing anyone would advise you to do is do a full restore and then load your latest backup.

    Thanks Seamus,

when it powers down it does not power back up automatically. I have to hold the home button and the power button for a few seconds until the phone resets and then it powers on without me requiring to input the sim pin.

If i do a full restore will all the date on the phone be wiped? Messages, contacts etc?

I have apps and music backed up through itunes but nothing else and not sure how to.

I have the same problem on a 3GS, crashing multiple times a day, I think it began with the 4.2 update. The phone is effectively useless as I cannot depend on it.

I have tried a full factory reset and reinstall as a new phone but the only result was crashing at 80% instead of 60% if it wasn't for a single guitar related app it would be in the bin. This is not helped by the fact that my work phone is a Samsung Galaxy S and just works.

Currently I am trying an external battery case to see if that helps.
