let me preface this by saying i wont make a decision till the iphone 5 is launched.

I use a 16gb 3gs, have done for the last 18mths. wife has an iphone 4. i also own an ipad (upgrading to the ipad 2 next month) and an apple tv.

i have tested iOS5 on the ipad 2, and apple tv for mirroring, and use airplay a fair bit between my pc/ipad/iphone/appletv along with home sharing on an occasion.

i am on vodafone perfect choice access plus 300 with 2gb per month, as is my wife (contract in my name as we also have vodafone at home resulting in €5 discount on line rental)

I could switch networks, but i dont think i will as i'm fairly happy with vodafone. as long as i stay on my plan when i upgrade i retain my 2gb but lose data roaming (not a big deal, but its nice to have)

I am strongly considering jumping to android, and a galaxy s 2 in particular.

if i stay with iOS it'll be an iphone 5 (which luckily as to where i work, i'll be able to test it before i buy)

Reasons i wont jump to android:

    1. vodafone go mental and give out the iphone 5 for free on launch week (thats how i got my 3gs so it could happen)
    2. i sell my 3gs to pay for my 5
    3. the iphone 5 will seriously blow my socks off (iOS 5 is nice, but will it be enough??)
    4. I like the integration between all my my apple products

Reasons i WILL jump to android

    1. the more i play with the S2 the more i like it
    2. the s2 is free on my price plan (still selling the 3gs for a few quid in the pocket)
    3. i'd like to know the OS inside out.
    4. i still have my other ios devices for integration

what to do?? i know posting here is a bit biased, but if i posted in the android forum it would be the other way...

    and dont say get both!!!!

As an S2 owner i have to say it is an amazing piece of kit, and the iPhone 5/4S/whatever they decide to call it.

Id say vodafone giving the new iPhone for free initially is a pipe dream though, they will sell them by the bucketload either way, so they might aswell make more money when they can.

Until we get an android device with a "retina" type resolution, I don't think I could part with my iPhone. Of course, you, being used to a 3GS might not notice too much of a difference. But do you not find yourself looking at the wife's iPhone 4 screen with awe? :pac:

The other compelling reason I would think is to get to know another OS really well. I would love to muck about in Android - though the stuff people have shown me they've done isn't really that exciting. That worries me!

Oh, and I really, really want a f**king FM radio!

After looking into the android world, whilst looking for a Tablet, I went for iPad 2 for the following reason - future updates.

I have a 3GS, soon to be 2 generations (and 2 years old) - but still I get IOS5. With Android this is totally unclear: no guarantees of updates, plus when the updates come, they go to manufacturer, then network, then user.

This turned me off Android big time!

I do sometimes covet my wife's retina display and 5mp cam with flash, that's true.

Trickle down updates wouldnt bother me as I'd probably root, as owning an iPhone seems to kill my apetite for tinkering, I'd relish the prospect.

The display on the S2 may not have the resolution of the iPhone 4 but trust me it is one of the best displays on any phone going, it really has to be seen to be believed.

Super AMOLED displays are very vivid, with exellent colour reproduction.

Also the S2 has a (very good) 8MP camera with flash :)

Is the difference between Super AMOLED and Retina that noticeable? I really cant see how it makes much difference on that size a screen to be honest.

you may need one of these

    :D

Seriously....depends how embedded you are in IOS

I am all mac at home, Macbook, time capsule, Airport Express, Extreme and phone

Everything is on itunes and the idea of changing everything again does not appeal to me.

Been playing with andriod and I like it but...to much hassle to move now

Heh. Yes I am a tad anorakish. But I don't think I'm so entrenched that I couldn't switch, plus if the latest rumour of it just being a 4s coming next month is true it might make my mind up for me

The colour difference is noticible, but the resolution? Not so much

Indeed, the SGS II display is definitely superior to the iPhone 4's in pretty much every way, bar the pointless stat of pixel density.

Have to say I was always envious of the SGS 2's display even when I had the 4. Even more so now that I've the busted 3GS as an iPod and a glorious 320x240 displayed x10 mini as a phone.

    Go for it!

Apple is great (I speak as a mac owner with iphone) but its only a brand.
Try out the competition, and then tell us all about it.

Well the only main argument I can see for moving is the fact that it is open. I love my iPhone but if it wasn't jailbroken I possible wouldn't bother with it. For me I will order the iPhone 5 whenever the dev team hack it, otherwise I am sticking with the 4.

Android is ok, but if you are used to iOS you will start to find irritating things about it.
