found myself on the m4 toll road by not getting off the n4 before it was too late as it was badly signposted.
at the toll gate i told the cashier i had no money for her.
she asked for i.d. wich i showed her. she gave me an invoice to be paid within two weeks.
has any one been in this situation before ?
i feel i have a case for non payment but dont know how to go about.

Non payment of €2.70? I'd suggest a solicitor.

Which of the signs did you miss, this one maybe....

Or maybe this one a few kms along the motorway. This sign is followed by the exit for Enfield where you can avoid the toll by driving to Kinnegad on the old N4. In case you're not aware, 'PPP' stands for 'Public-Private Partnership' which is NRA code for 'toll road'.

I would definitely recommend you see a solicitor about this.

Don't waste your time and money. Pay the toll on time.

I do that in the shops the whole time. Probably cost the shops a fortune compared to what i am actually spending

If you dont have cash do they let you go regardless?

I paid at the toll booth where options were doubling back and driving another 20 mins or using card. Twas a few years ago, think there's barrier free tolls now where they scan your plate so they'll know if you don't pay within 24hrs or whatever it is so I assume you can go on if you don't have cash at a barriered one?

There's no 'barrier free tolling' on the M4, the free flowing lane allows people with windscreen tags to pass through after the tag has been validated at which stage the barrier lifts. It is not done by reg. plate scanning as there is no gantry with overhead cameras.

If you have no tag and no cash you have to drive up to a manned kiosk/barrier and talk your way out of it.

For the toll? They have you registration and ID and issue you with a bill. If you don't pay, you end up in court.

I can't see what case you have for non-payment. The road is extremely well signed for tolling. You also seem to know that there was a toll but you made the error in getting off at the wrong exit.

I would suggest that you don't waste any more of your time and pay the bill. You are spending far more than 2.70 for your own mistake.

I suggest that next time you memorise the Exit number and the location you need to leave the road to avoid the toll.

so they issue with an invoice and not a fine?

Yes. However, non payment of the invoice would mean non-payment of the toll, which breaches the bye-laws, which would lead to prosecution.
