Help - Laptop Screen Just Divided into 6 Small Screens

    Hi

I'm having a major problem with my laptop screen - a friend was using Skype on it when it just froze and rebooted but when it started up again the screen was divided into 6 small screens (as you can see in the screen shots below).

I've tried a few things such as restoring Windows to an earlier state but this did not work. Another thing that has happened is that all my programs have started to tell me they are not official licenses, so Windows 7 says it is an illegal copy, so too does Microsoft Security Essentials and so on.

I don't think it has anything to do with the actual screen as on two occasions when I have turned it on, it has worked normally. And when I restored it and the screen worked properly for this occasion all my licences were back working fine.

Has anyone here encountered this before, or have any possible solutions.

    Cheers

I've seen this a few dozen times. Is it by any chance a HP DVxxxxx series machine?
If so your GPU is overheating badly and is possibly already irrepairably damaged!!

Looking at the exact same problem on another laptop at the moment..
Nvidia Defect Forum, may be able to give you the best advice at the moment.. As they are still helping sort out claims for people..

The problem could be caused by a failure in the BGA grid underneath the Nvidia GPU.
This defect is caused by the removal of the lead from the solder, As such this, like the Nvidia defect, is also an inherent defect and you would be able to pursue the retailer.

    From That forum.

    Hi Guys

Thanks for the replies. Yes it is a HP DV2535 bought four years ago. Sounds like it is a hardware problem so.

Do any of you know how much a repair would cost? Also is it one that can be repaired manually or am I better off handing it in somewhere?

    Cheers

Don't bother bringing it to get repaired, most repairs involve taking a heatgun to the GPU (even putting the motherboard in the oven for a couple of minutes will "fix it!"), reapplying thermal paste and it will work as a temporary solution, its going to fail again no matter what, look for advice on the Nvidia Defects forum linked above!
