Hi, just wondering is this problem familiar to anyone who can advise me on the steps to take.

98 hyundai coupe 1.6 suddenly has looser steering. I noticed this last week as I took a roundabout wider than usual - wheel needs more turn that usual to make turns now. also when turning or starting off turning at very low speeds there is a clunking/knocking sound from under the bonnet.

any insight would be appreciated regards problem, parts, places to go and what sort of money I will be looking at.

    Cheers

I had similar problem with an old A4, kept hearing a knocking noise when ever I took a sharp left turn, turned out she needed a new CV joint, cost €80

If you have no idea what it is you should get it checked out ASAP as its steering. An assessment should take no more than 30 mins to isolate the issue so do that first and then ask for advice.

I would check tire pressures anyway for the steering. The knocking, when does it knock? Cornering (full lock or partial), bumps, accelerating or decelerating.

Cheers. yeh I parked it up last week. Knocking is when accelerating at partial and full. but only at slow corners and turns hmmm. less noticable or not at all at regualer driving speeds

My guess is it could be your steering rack. either way you should not drive the car till its fixed

Sounds like a CV joint. Next stop is your driveshaft if you don't address it.

Is the power steering fluid level ok?
