I've never had this problem with FF before, at least not since v2.5 but ever since I updated last week to 6.01 it's been freezing regularly for up to ten seconds and using >100% CPU power. I haven't installed any extra extensions since version 3.0. Has anyone else had this kind of problem just recently?

I have seen it reported, but haven't experienced it.

I would try disabling all plugins/extensions, test it to see if the problem is still there.
If the problem disappears then you need to figure out which extension is causing it ... might need updating ... and if it doesn't you have at least eliminated one possible source of the problem.

Is it possibly a flash problem? Does it happen on specific pages?

BTW .... I appear to be using version 6.02, so maybe an update to FF would cure it ....

I'm getting it with just one tab open (boards.ie). I've quite a few extensions installed and because of the ridiculous numbering system I've had to disable compatibility checking. I guess I'll try them one by one.

If you've a multi-core system, the 120% just means that it's using the equivalent of 1.2 cores. It doesn't necessarily mean that your CPU is overloaded.

I know it's annoying when you ask a question and someone gives you a overly-big solution around the problem (like answering "How can I change the background colour in Windows Notepad" with "Install Linux and use gedit" :D), but have you given consideration to Google Chrome? I started using it over the summer and I think it's excellent in performance terms compared to Firefox. But there could be specific features you need. Sorry if this is an annoying suggestion!

You could also try the nightly builds and see if the situation improves, but disabling plugins is a sensible first step.

My hatred for Chrome is well documented across various forums, although I have had to resort to using it at work (windows 7) where FF is just unusably slow.

Going to start testing by disabling plugins. First up is greasemonkey...

I get random lockups in Firefox as well. I heard somewhere that it might be AdBlocks fault, but it annoys me more to browse without that so I haven't looked into it. It happens to me across windows, OS X and linux and across two different computers so it can't be a hardware or OS problem.

One thing that just popped into my head, do you use firefox sync?
