What would it be cooler for Ireland to win?

The rugby World Cup or the soccer World Cup? Rugby for me, I would just feel a lot more proud if Ireland won a competition that was an honest one which is also united with the north, unlike soccer. I think this could be our year in the WRC now after the Aussie performance as well! Come on Ireland!!! Ronan O'Gara to win with a drop goal in the last second against New Zealand. :D

Eh, soccer no question. It's a much bigger competion and would boost the economy a fair bit and would be a huge morale boost. I'd be proud if we won the world cup. But I'm biased against rugby anyways.

Soccer would be a bigger achievement given that there are far more countries who play at a high level. It would also probably draw in bigger audiences and celebrations. But we'll take what we can get at this stage!

I'm a fan of rugby but I think I'd take Ireland qualifying for the soccer wc ahead winning the rugby wc

EVERYONE cheats in rugby it's just not as obvious as it is in soccer because they get away with it, richie mccaw for example is forever bending the rules

No respect for the referee, no goal-line technology, segregated crowds....I could go on and on. Rugby is a sport one can be far more proud to be a supporter of. Rugby people in this country mostly support teams they have a natural affinity to as well (Munster, Leinster, Connaught, Ulster)

    Rugby - proper men

Irish international soccer matches have become unwatchable, before we had proper soccer heroes but now when i see the Irish team its shocking full of gutless yellow bellied good for nothingers - besides dunne and given

I watched three full soccer matches and extended highlights of another seven and didn't see on instance of cheating. Sure it happens from time to time, just the same as eye gouging, stamping, illegal high tackling and proper punch ups occur in rugby.

It only counts as 'watching' if your eyes are open. Soccer has become poisoned by cheating to the point where it is barely watchable anymore.

Okay, hyperbole aside - you must admit that soccer has become rife with it - can you blame people for turning away from it?

    It's more popular than ever.

I think its harsh to say its rife with cheating.

Of course it happens, it happens in all sports. I do understand peoples reasoning for not watching it or for being turned away from it.

    It's soccer.

Football is what Dublin won at the weekend.

Sure. It can be more popular than ever but that doesn't obviate the fact that people have turned away from it because of how it's evolved into a game where conning, cheating and diving has become so commonplace that it's accepted as part of the game. Indeed, I've noticed on numerous ocassions were players were commended by commentators for their ability to trick the referee into awarding undeserved free kicks. Damien Duff springs to mind.

Having said all that, I still think it would be cooler if Ireland actually won the soccer WC. I think that given the popularity of the game in Ireland it would certainly go a long way to raising morale. I don't think it's going to happen though.

Jesus I hate when people get snitty about this.

    Gaelic football
    American football
    Association football
    Sometimes even rugby football

They're all called 'football'. It's usually obvious from the context which one somebody is talking about. If you don't know, then just ask.

If you correct someone, not only are you being pedantic and rude, you're also wrong.
