How do we protect our savings against possible financial meltdown?

Is there anything we should be doing to protect savings against a possible financial meltdown and\or another Great Depression \ prolonged recession ? Really not sure if there are any steps that can or should be taken. Can anyone advise?

Just for the sake of argument, lets say you had 100K of cash\savings - What would you do with it given the current financial chaos in the european and wider economy?

Would you put it all in the best savings account you could find? (e.g. http://www.bonkers.ie/compare-savings-accounts/)

Or are there wiser things to do with it?
