There is an hourly number 40 bus from Cork at twenty to the hour 8.40am-8.40pm inclusive but due to the changes to the Waterford-Dublin 004 service that bus is now very infrequent so you will be left waiting upwards of an hour in Waterford for a connection to Carlow making the journey much longer at just over 4 hours 30 minutes

Got nobody who could give you a lift to somewhere on the old N8 mainline? Take a bus/train from there

Train is possible, but can be messy, as some connections are via Heuston or you need to use more than two trains.

In certain cases, you may get a better fare if you book each leg separately.

OP - Use the Bus Eireann Journey Planner herehttp://194.106.151.94/jplan/bin/.

Enter Cork in the "from" box and Carlow in the "to" box, select a date and time and then click on "search connection".

It will then prompt you to be more specific - Select Cork (Parnell Bus Station) from the dropdown list and Carlow (Barrack Street).

Hit "Search Connection" again and your list of options will appear - you can further expand the list by clicking "sooner" and "later".

There is one direct service on BE Route 7 on Fridays (3h45m)

I'm sure BE could in future reschedule route 73 (Waterford to Athlone). I'm pretty sure there are a good number of people would be in this position on a daily basis and instead of having two buses arriving in Carlow at the same time one could be timetabled to pick up passengers from expressway services who are also travelling to commuter towns.

From what I heard recently from a driver, all timetable work is now outsourced by Bus Eireann and they may be produced by some new computer software?
