Help needed..... Galway (Tonabrocky) & Ariva 120 Combo - Saorview Signal breakup

    Hey

I have a combo (HD_Ariva_120_Combo_Box) saorview box for the past month, over the last week or so the Saorview signal as gone to pot.

The saorview picture quality has gotten VERY intermittent (right now I have 96% signal but it unwatchable, stuttering & pixelated). The Signal strength seems to jump up & down, 96% one minute, 10% the next. When rain comes the signal is as good as gone.

I'm looking for direction as to what the problem could be.

    This is my setup.

    1. I have this aerial http://www.tvtrade.ie/red-group-a-uhf-aerial.html ... it is DIRECTLY pointed at Tonabrocky transmitter which is 6kms away. I have direct line of sight to the transmitter. I've checked and it hasn't moved, I can see the transmitter (It is just across the way) and the aerial couldn't be more accurately pointed.
    2. I have a CT100 satellite cable from the aerial to the TV. The cable is 5 years old & in good condition.
    3. The HD Ariva 120, is a month old. It crashes at least once a day especially on the HD Sat channels.
I'm struggling to figure out what the issue is.
    Could the reciever be faulty?
Could the fact that the signal has to cross a lake (Lough Atalia) effect the signal?

    Any ideas much appreciated!

    HD Sat channels

Its your satellite dish you need to check.
the wind may have knocked it off line a bit.

oops just saw its the terrestrial ones you have a prob with ,

have you tried doing a rescan?

Reflections off water can cause problems, especially if your aerial has an unobstructed view, but I would think a narrow stretch like that would have to be in just the wrong place.

Maybe you have too much signal, try an attenuator or use a splitter as such.

I couldn't get a stable signal from Tonabrocky on the east side of the city so I swapped the aerial and pointed it in the general direction of Maghera. Much better now.

    Hey desaparecidos,

Do you know what aerial you used?

    Cheers

You would need a Group C/D for Maghera which is on Channel 48. (EDITED)

Your Group A aerial might work, move the aerial around and see does it work. It is meant to filter out anything after Ch 37 though so might not work.

Use a group C/D aerial (or wideband) for Maghera, mux 2 from there will be on UHF channel 55.

Yes thats true Vince Cable. Apologies, I'll edit that post. The OP should try moving the aerial around first (although i would imagine the signal may be weak with the existing group A).

Thanks everyone, I've ordered a wideband aerial and will give Maghera a go.

    Cheers

I've used THIS Aerial pointed at Tonabrocky for the last 3 months to get all the Soarview channels and I've never had any issues with a perfect picture especially in RTE 2HD.
I have it also connected to a Ferguson Ariva 120 Combo box, Never had any issues.

Tonabrocky is suffering plannied morning outages and RTE have nothing up on Aertel warning us of it. This will continue until Saturday the 1st.

    GalwayFella,

I'm an installer in Dublin and not enough people are talking about how poor quality these boxes are. I have installed 3 boxes in the last month which i had to exchange because the DTT tuner (irish channels) was glitchy or would just not receive a signal or would jump from 0% to 10% to 90%. I had to take out a further 4 boxes I installed for customers because they keep freezing and need to be unplugged to reset. I dont know wether its the last 2 software updates or just the fact that they are being cheaply assembled in poland. I wish there was another alternative because i have lost all faith in these balls of dirt. If you're uk channels are working and if you have an mpeg4 tv try plugging your aerial straight into the tv. if there are no glitches on the irish channels you have a faulty box. I'd try this first before messing with your aerial setup for hours!

    Hey

Just a note for those who may find this when searching.

I've been pointed at Maghera for 2 weeks and have had perfect reception (bar one night when I had a few artafacts on scene changes... only happened the once).

    Thanks for the Help!!
