Im going to float this idea for a wee while and see how things go.

Over the last few months Ive read in various threads from a number of different posters about how difficult it can be to make male friends or to meet like minded individuals. It was also brought up before (by Drav I think) about having a thread for general meet ups to run along side our more scheduled beers so heres what Im thinking.

It doesnt matter where you are from,if you want to try and make new friends post in here. What with most of us being Irish then the usual thing is to go for pints. Now dont get me wrong,I love my Guinness as much as the next person however this thread is to be all encompassing so as to appeal to both drinkers and non drinkers alike and could be used to suggest different things such as going to concerts/comedy shows, sports events, activities like golfing,go karting etc as well as more beer related fun.

As I said,I aim the thread to be as open and as welcoming as possible to everyone.I know myself how hard it is to meet new people outside of the work crew or housemates so think it could be cool to run for a bit and see where it leads.

So any thoughts on the idea?

I think it's a great idea for those who want to avail of it, but could be abused quite easily too as it's out in the wild/public view. Just harkening back to the last beers where that tall dude showed up and wouldn't tell anyone who he was. He did no harm but you could get some right strange folk just showing up. I'd suggest making it a private forum of sorts just for people's security and peace of mind.

hmmm, wouldn't a private forum counter act the idea behind this thread somewhat?

They generally don't tend to be easy to find, unless someone approaches a member or someone links in their sig... :pac:

Even then, I doubt there truely is a need for a private forum here to arrange meetups.

There's a reference to 1 guy last time who wasn't too forthcoming about his Boards ID, to be honest it doesn't matter much to me. I didn't even realise he was hesitant about giving out his ID because I was more focused on just enjoying the night as I'm sure he was also and he was a sound bloke too.

Once someone is out and cool to get along with there is no problem.

That guy told at least two of us his username.

I agree with drav, the private forum idea is very offputting.i dont think there's a need anyway.

Overall yeah nice idea.me and drav and others meet up for pool and other things and it'd be good to have these things happen regularly with more people (no offence drav, luv ya really :D)

We had a meetup in July for the Watches and Timepieces forum. Drinks and fondling our bits and pieces  :P
The venue was sent out via PM ;)
This was to keep would be thieves away.
I'm sure if people express an interest then the venue and time can be sent via PM. You'd then have a list of forum id's attending too.

If you're interested, I set up a forum request for something similar a while ago, the link is in my sig, you can see what alot of people saw as the hazards and benefits of the idea was.

But I would recommend it, have met some great people from boards and would def recommend it as a social tool

Is the idea to have group meet-ups, like beers but not necessarily confined to the pub, or more guerilla stylee "I fancy a game of pool or whatever, anyone in town this evening PM me if you're on" sort of thing?

I lurk here; I've met some of you at impromptu's or AH beers - I'm good mates with RedXIV and a few others :D and it's always nice to make new friends.

So we all agree that it's a brilliant idea - now suggestions...

I think its a good idea, except that everything always happens in Dublin :(

I'll just stalk ye're meet ups from afar.

That's exactly what I was thinking. The Dublin bit..not the stalking bit! Maybe we could put where we are in our posts, even if only broad general location, and take it from there?

Limerick / Cork / Clare here - a mixture of living and working places.

    I'm liking the idea folks!:)

I set up and ran a very successful meetup group while I was in Cork (I got a best friend from it myself! Also 2 couples were formed and one went on to have a baby!!!) and I am currently doing the same thing in Prague. The events are varied and reasonably frequent, in fact at the last one there were about 40 people.

If anyone has any questions or needs advice let me know. I'd be happy to share with any interested people as to how I go about my groups :)

In fact here is a video someone took during part of our last meetup (a scavenger hunt!!)

Think it's a great idea - I'm a longtime lurker since I seem to be working for any of the beers I've seen posted about . . . count me in!

It quite annoys me how most of these beers take place in Dublin. Hopefully the AH beers proved that Galway is a decent enough place for a night out!

Anyone else ever have to go round to the neighbours as a kid trying to sell the "Far East" magazine? What the hell was that all about?!:pac:

Dunno if anyone here would be into it but I got an invite through Facebook for this for this Thursday night.

Its based on a novel by Jack Ketchum and if any of you have read or seen The Girl Next Door (not that tripe about a pornstar) then you know what to expect.

For only a fiver Im going to head along anyway.

I’ll admit, it was something of a shock to the system to note the Strangers at Beers thread some time ago in AH, and I was weary of coming forward as part of me disliked the idea of giving away the anonymity. Experienced the exact same thing on the night, but I do apologise for my reluctance to say the username that exact evening. I’m just used to either lurking or voicing terrible jokes about Coppers or some diatribe about how sensitive the world is getting over the wrong thing in Humanities, which is where I lurk for the most part. I was thankful that Otis and Drav didn't immediately dismiss me as some locked idiot when I asked if they were from the internet.

In no way did I mean to abuse the system or disrupt the night for your regulars, apologies if my silence or standoffishness gave off that impression. For what it’s worth, I often speak with people from the night via pm, and thought you were all interesting and likeable people on the night. I was fairly locked earlier on in the day and I often go to the Duke and this led me to thinking that I’d just go for the sake of trying something novel. I apologise to those few I talked to about my first kiss, especially the oral sex innuendo. And also to Galvasean for approaching him with the line ‘So you’re the handsome godless palaeontologist actor then? How are you?’

Anyway, it’s early yet. Hope this finds everyone I met on the night in good health.

Top post Typh. Hopefully you'll come to more beers and have a laugh. It's daunting for anybody to go on the piss with people you don't know bar a username on the internet.

It was for me but I've met some awesome people from this site. You can still remain anonymous even if you do give your username. Nobody's asking for you for your life story. Everyone's there for the same reason; to put a name to a username and for general shíts and giggles.

    :)

EDIT: Just noticed when that was written. Late to the party but the post still stands dammit.
