Will a Canon 24-70 hood fit a 24-105?

    Hey all,

Just bought a 24-105 on ebay, and though I haven't gotten it yet, one of the things I was going to do was buy a 24-70 lens hood on ebay for it (bigger hood, so when I reverse it on the lens for storage/carrying in my bag, it'll cover more of the lens body for protection against knocks or such).

What I'm wondering is, does anyone know if the 24-70 hood will fit the 24-105 lens? I think they've the same filter size, so it may seem a silly question, but out of boredom before, I tried to put my Sigma 70-200 hood on my sigma 10-20, and it was too big (despite them both beight 77mm filter sizes).

So yeah, just thought I'd ask...

    Cheers :)

175116.jpg short answer yes it will fit ...but no it wont do the job.

the 24-70 lens shade is long compared to the petal shape of the 24-105mm.

Bit confusing there, PC. How do you mean it won't do the job?

Both lenses are 24 on the widest side, so it can't cause any vignetting, surely?

    http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-24-105mm-f-4-L-IS-USM-Lens-Review.aspx
Pictured above from left to right with their respective lens hoods in place are the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM Lens, Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens and Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM Lens. As mentioned before, the 24-105 L's hood extends with the lens (most lenses behave this way) while the much larger 24-70 L hood stays in one place. The 24-70 L extends inside the hood - the overall size of the 24-105 with the hood in place changes while the 24-70 L stays the same length. Because the 24-70 L lens hood is in a fixed position (it does not extend/retract), the objective lens retracts deeper into the hood as the focal length is increased. In other words, the 24-70 L lens hood extends much farther from the objective element of the lens at 70mm than at 24mm. The 24-70 L is using an appropriate-for-the-selected-focal-length lens hood at all focal lengths while the 24-105 is using a made-for-24mm hood at all focal lengths (like most lenses).

    So.... what?!

Right, I know how the 24-70 works (lens hood doesn't move, just the lens inner tube, and it works opposite to most lenses, so it's longer at 24 than it is a 70), and I know the 24-105 is a more conventional design (like most lenses), but what I'm trying to figure out in my head is how that will have a practical affect in real-world situations?

Will it cause vignetting? That's the only issue I can see arising, but I've seen the 24-70 hood in person a few times and it doesn't really look long enough to cause any vignetting at 24mm? (I should probably point out i've only ever used 1.6x crop cameras)?

Someone states at the link below that vignetting is only an issue on full frame cameras -

Ah, okay. Now it's starting to make a bit more sense, alright.

I did a bit of googling around, but evidently my searching wasn't very thorough. Ah, I'll wait til I get my lens first (if i ever get it, bought off SimplyElectronics, so... haha :P ) and then I'll decide on what lens hood to use.

Cheers to ye both for your help.
