Rainwater harvesting systems???

Im looking into rainwater harvesting systems
Both overground systems and also underground systems.

Around 60-70 % of my water usage would be used for toilets, washing machine, dishwasher and showers.

So with these pesky IMF water meters on their way,Im seriously looking at going for a domestic rainwater harvesting system.

Can anyone advice me on them and what would suit a domestic house with regards type and size of system???

Is there much upheaval of the house in order to install a system???

What is best,a plastic tank or a concrete tank and above ground or underground???

Do rainwater harvesting systems freeze up in wintertime???

    Thanks.:)

Paddy if you want to use the water for flushing toilets then fair play but I wouldn`t consider making it any part of the drinking, shower, bath or dishwasher/washing machine supply.

paddy there is quite a few systems around. It all depends on what your willing to pay. I am looking into it myself so have done a little research. However i am holding out as i think they are still far too expensive.

As i have kids i would want my water to be suitable for everything so will need to have it nuked so to speak. I dont want to risk my kids drink stagnant or dangerous water.

The price range seems to go from a couple of thousand to megabucks.

Im mainly after a system that could just do the toilets, and likes of washing machine/dishwasher.
Maybe for showers too,but no way for drinking water.

I run the mains water to filter jugs for drinking.

    Hi Paddy,

I'm looking to do a similar thing as yourself and have gone around to a few companies and your right the price range can be quite big.

I've got a good price (well what I consider a good price) from one company in particular and if you want i can PM you the details of the company.
(I have no affiliation with the company)

Currently half way through the build process at the moment and with water charges about to come in I think the rain water harvester is definitely something that will have long term benefits

    Hi,

Didnt go for it the end due to budget constraints, but we have left it that we can add the system in, in the future. the company we where going with for it gave us a great price but it just isnt in the budget at the moment.

It is something that we will definitely go for in the near future especially with the introduction of water rates.

had always thought we were going to install this system but as it gets closer to the end and we've realised we're going to be short on the overall costs we're not sure if we should just forget about it at this stage. The best quote we received was from a company that doesn't include any uv filter. think it was 2.5k + VAT. wud love if people cud pm their quotes and to hear others experiences of installing system.

Those commercial tanks are expensive and small.I built my own rainwater harvesting tank.I built an underground tank about 6 years ago with 6 inch blocks on the flat and gave it two coats of plaster. Its about 12.6 x 20 feet and about 6 ft deep I used cattle slats (seconds) to cover it and 3 inchs of concrete on top.Eventually I built a shed on top of the tank so the piece of ground didnt go to waste. The rainwater goes through everything in the house except the cold tap on the kitchen sink and only runs dry a few times a year.I think it holds around eight thousand gallons,it was the best thing i ever done and would recommend it to anyone especially now that water charges are in.Rain is the one thing you are guaranteed in Ireland and so far its free.Surely they wont charge us for rainwater as well:-).............although i wouldnt put anything past them.
