Change of ownership question

Hi,
Just a query if anyone can help please.
I recently sold my car to my brother.He gave me forms to fill out to change ownership that he had picked up, so as he is my brother i just filled them in and signed not really checking Only today i recieved post and it was a registration document for the car in my name (i had previously misplaced mine in a house move).When i confronted him he told me one of his "mechanic" mates told him it was ok to do this, and he said when he applys for tax in the motor tax office that it will go into his name then.
Now i don't know much about these things, but that does not sound right to me??Im just worried that if the car is in my name, i'm liable for any issues down the road?
Can anyone please clarify.

Are you sure he didn't fill out a form to replace the cert you lost? In any case the car is still in your name, so speeding/parking tickets etc will still come to you. Fill out his details on the back of the document you got, have him sign it, and post it yourself.

Thanks for the reply, he did send off to replace the form i lost, but it has my name and details still attached to it, i'm not looking at the reg form now but is there a place on it to fill in my details?

You can only get a replacement cert in the current owners name. Sounds like that's what happened, fill out his details and post it off.

He got you to sign the form to request a replacement Vehicle Licensing Cert which you have now received. This cert is sent to the current owner only was still you.

You both need to fill out and sign the Change of Ownership section on that Cert, it should be on the rear of the Cert afaik. Once it is signed by you (the seller) and him (the new owner) and posted off to the DOE in Shannon, he will receive a new Vehicle Licensing Cert in about 2 weeks with his name on it.

Thanks Guys for the info, i'll fill it out then and send it off, just didn't expect to see anything coming back with my name on it and wasn't sure of the procedure etc.

Its a two step process once the original VLC is missing.

1. Current owner fills out replacement VLC form and drops it into local Motor Tax office.

2. When the replacement VLC arrives, the current owner and new owner fill it in/sign it and send it back. 2 or 3 weeks later a new VLC is sent to the new owner.
