    Hi folks.

I know this probably has been done to death allready but is a self employed person entitled to any benefits???

What I am saying is if you are VAT registered and have a C2 etc but your business overheads are so high that you are not pulling a wage and the business is costing you money. Also the persons spouse is on Maternity benefit until next January.

Obviously there would be audited accounts to verify all this.

    Thanks for the replys.

If you have no assets left or private saving left then eventually you will be entitled to something on social welfare.

It's a toughie Mal, according to my accountant, yes - if you can bring your accounts to the social welfare office and sit down to talk with someone, there is assistance you can claim, but obviously not job seeker's allowance.

It's called Supplementary Welfare Allowance, and you qualify for this only after applying (and failing to qualify) for Jobseeker's Allowance, and satisfying the requirements of a Means Test. This means test will involve looking at your books, so you're already on your way.

    Good Luck.

    Hi there,

A self-employed person most definitely CAN get jobseekers allowance. It is means tested and they will go through all your accounts, but once you pass the means test you will get it on the same basis as a person who is looking for paye work. Go to your social welfare office immediately and apply.
