Tips for Better Study 2011/12

I thought I would set up this thread for the students interested in hearing advice about better forms of study for university. Particularly the fresher's, as myself.

I am slightly stuck with regards to the reading I've recieved for Sociology today and how I should work around it.

I am currently reading the recommended pages for "A Sociology of Ireland", which were referenced in the handout from the Sociology lecture. I'm trying to work around these few pages for tomorrow. I was wondering how should I go about it.

I plan on taking down a few notes on information that would help me, which I may have missed in the lecture. Also for facts like 57% of Irish farmers had less than 30 acres in 1926, do you need to source where this stat came from? I know that in university, I will need to back-up a lot of my points so I don't want to state this and claim it as my own.

Also when will the first assignments be due and can we start working on them before tutorials start or are the tutorials necessary to build-up towards writing those assignments.

If anyone has any advice for me, let me know. Also if any other's here need advice with study, go ahead and post a comment. The purpose of this thread, like many others here is for students to help one another in learning to adapt to university work.

Remember to include getting drunk in your study plan, highly recommended.

You'll need to back this up in an essay. You'll get tutorials in a few weeks about how to reference in Sociology. There is no need to reference in an exam. Lecturers don't expect you to do it. Just write down the statistic and carry on. Don't make them up though. One of my friends wrote in a 3rd year history exam that 47 million people died in WWI :pac:.

It's your first day starting off. You should be off in Dunnes buying a few cheap cans and not on here looking for study tips :D. Enjoy your 3/4 years because they'll fly by very quickly.

I'd recommend taking time out to enjoy the freedom of going to the SU for a few pints and the odd game of pool instead of double Sociology. Makes the pint taste so much better.

karaokeman: Make sure to listen in lectures and make sure to do good reading for your essays. That's what I would say to you. Other than that enjoy university, you won't be there forever. You're going to have more spare time now, than you probably will never have again for the rest of your life. Use it. Join some societies, meet people, figure out who you want to be. A recommendation would be to make full use of what the Career Guidance people leave outside of their office in the Arts Block. It's largely because of that that I am where I am right now.

University will be over like the blink of an eye. I remember being in the same position as you 3 years ago. I'm going to miss Maynooth a lot.

Not sure if that's directed at me but you definitely have to reference in an essay. If you don't you'll get in major shít over plagiarism and get 0% for the essay. Getting the 0% would be the least of your concerns in that matter. Listen up in tutorials and everything will be fine.

In an exam you can reference if you want but they don't expect you to. Just don't go making wild claims and have a basic idea of authors and theorists.

I meant in exams! We were told that we had to reference! That it was expected!

Seriously? We were never told that in any of my classes... Suppose it depends on the lecturer!

You will not be expected to supply full references for any sociology exam.

Also, wait for tutorials before starting assignments, they will talk you through requirements, referencing etc.

We weren't told to fully reference but we were told that everything did have to have a reference e.g. article and author

In a sit down exam? For an essay, yes - full references, but never in an exam

In a sit down exam. Not full but still references all the same. I remember it clearly because I never had to for law or history

If it is an obvious prominent idea you should supply names (i.e. Weber, Marx or a partcularly important author from certain courses) but you wont ever be penalised for not including article titles, and will never be asked for a full (i.e. properly formatted) citation.

One of my favourite Marx quotations is about agency. It goes like this,

"When a man enters university for the first time, he should realise that alcohol is an agent for the delivery of what man seeks most, boobies. That is all"
