    Is there a way of getting Gmail to send an alert to my home e-mail account when i get a new mail?

    In settings you can create a filter to forward all mail to your home mail or just from certain addresses. Don't think it can send an alert.

    Click the cog wheel top right and go in to mail settings. Then the filters tab and click create new filter. It's like an Outlook rule.

    Or you can also get your gmail mails in outlook\thunderbird if you enable pop. Click the Forwarding POP/IMAP Setting and be sure to click the link for configuration instructions.

    you could always use the canned response lab to send you a notification if you didnt want the whole message
