Change admin on HD from another PC?

I connected a HD to a laptop, from a desktop I had that stopped working for me. I was trying to retrieve some music from it that I wanted to keep. I ran into a prob, I can see all my stuff but access seems to be restricted. I tried to play files from their original location and it wouldn't work, I tried to copy n paste but I get a message telling me I need admin rights to do so.

Can I change or disable the admin settings for the whole drive? Can I do it for individual file/folders?

What other options do I have.

I'd like to be able to use the drive as extra storage without too much hassle.

Also I noted some of the files I was trying to access were written in blue, what's that all about?

Files in blue means they have been compacted. The windows disk cleanup compacts old files, that is ones which haven't been accessed for a period of time.

You could use a live linux distro on CD or USB to copy the files you want.

No its quite simple use YUMI
    http://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multiboot-usb-creator/

To create a bootable USB stick with a Linux distro on it. Puppy linux is quite small and fine for what you want. It's one of the distro options in YUMI

Boot from the usb. choose linux distros from the menu then choose Puppy

Once booted into Puppy you should be able to see all your hard drives and navigate to the folders/files you want and copy them to the other hard drive or the USB if there is sufficient room on the USB.
