A husband and wife used a solicitor in changing the names on deeds of a house. At the start of this solicitor was asked how much ? price agreed and couple pay in cash.5 years later they get a bill for the same "work" looking for immediate payment. This pensioner couple have always paid any of their bills punctually, this letter isnt doing their health any good either. After ringing solicitors they are still waiting for a return call. Any other way of dealing with this ?

You said they paid in cash which suggests the VAT was 'overlooked' or a single solicitor did the work as a solo run i.e. the practice didn't see the money which might explain why it's still on the books as unpaid.

Write the solicitors a letter, name the individual who was paid, make sure to say that he was paid in cash and then forget about it.

Looks to me like the individual has been rumbled and they're going back over work that he/she did but which was never officially billed.

The legal eagles here will probably advise that's it's too late for them to sue for the money anyway.

There is a 6 year limitation in cases such as this. They could well be sued successfully.

Even if the payment was in cash, solrs accounts regulations would require that it be properly shown in the books.

Have you a receipt for the cash payment.
