I had a look and it is impressive but will it be available at the price quoted? It will work on saorview but may have a few limitations ie no series link, channel numbers may be in the high range, may not switch for summertime. other than that with blu ray and 2 tuners its impressive. i am waiting until next year.

if you do get it at that price please post back with a review.

    heres a link to a review hxttp://www.ricability-digitaltv.org/pages/products/digital_tvs/index.asp?Product=Panasonic%20DMR-BW780EBK

Had not thought of the channel renumbering to be honest.

Seem to be a good bit of kit for the money.

Sadly excluded from the argos 30 day return policy so no chance to have a play and return if any issues.

Have a g20 tv which is great.usb recording is fine but ties up the tuner in the tv.

So recording terrestial on an analogue dmr-eh58.

    Analogue signal very poor here

    Almost unwatchable!!

It seems that you can reorder channel numbers according to page 75 of the manual.

Hold fire for a little longer! There's a new range of Blu-Ray recorders with HDD and Freeview HD being released soon (according to Tech Radar) from LG & Samsung.

Although on paper Panasonic would be a much higher quality brand, there is still the ongoing problem of incompatibility with Saorview, and their (so far) refusal to issue a firmware update to cure this.

That's not to say the LG's or the Samsungs would be guaranteed to be compatible either, but there's a higher probability that they would.

One of the main diffrences in interoperability between Saorview and Freeview HD is when it comes to recording.

You will not be able to move Freeview HD recordings off the drive or burn to disk. Different manufacturers have implemented this is in different ways - including the blocking the moving/archiving to disk HD content which is a requirement of Freeview HD spec. Some have even blocked SD content (Humax).

This would have consequences when it comes to recording Saorview HD channels.

For the price be careful. Panasonic dont manufacture these for Ireland and will tell you as such, should you have a problem.

    @stb

    I appreciate your input

I am hopeing to use this just for saorview not freeview.

Do you mean that the unit will not copy recordings at all from the hdd to the dvd drive or only that there might be some restrictions

Would this not make the unit not fit for purpose as regards argos selling it in eire.

Again i am not looking for series link etc, just to record to hdd and have a bluray player all in one box.

i know that i could wait for an irish model to come out, but given the irish market, will that ever happen?

Perhaps the Panasonic is an old model that doesn't have this implemeted. This does not surprise me (it wont do iplayer btw)

"The Freeview HD content management system also allows viewing of HD content on other compatible, networked devices in the home – such as PCs or network- connected display screens [Footnote: External recording functionality and in-home networking are optional features which the Freeview HD standard supports. It is up to individual manufacturers what level of functionality they provide in their Freeview HD products].

Again, the only limitation is that this viewing of content should remain within the home, rather than allowing the uploading of content to the
    internet.

All new Freeview HD-branded equipment (set-top boxes, integrated television sets and digital TV recorders) has the required content management technology built in.

There are absolutely no restrictions on SD (standard definition) recordings, and all existing SD Freeview recorders are unaffected."

I guess that as you said,it is a matter of buyer beware.it could be quite possible that when and if a irish model becomes available that the same restrictions might apply

    Hi everyone,

I again have encountered a problem - hope you can help me out. I'm after buying a Pansonic HDD Recorder DMR-HW220 and am trying to install it. Can you help me with installation? At the moment, I have the Saorview Aerial plugged into the RF In slot and the wire they supplied coming from the RF OUT to the TV. Nothing happens!! Also, where or how do I connect the lead for Freeview?? I'm incredibly stupid when it comes to these things!

    Thanks in advance.
