How long do dealers keep cars for?

In general, how long would a dealer keep a car for before dropping the price to sell the car? I have been on the lookout for a new car for the last couple of months and have noticed that the cars I looked at 2 months ago are still for sale and are still at the same price. But the longer they keep these cars, the more their value falls (An 08 car will soon be an 07 car for example). So will the dealer eventually lower the asking price? I am surprised I have not seen the asking price being lowered on any of the cars I have looked at.

It all depends on how popular the car is and how much they paid for it, which leads to how long they'll keep it and how much bargaining room there is.

But from my own recent experience good cars don't last long on forecourts.

That suggests I have been looking at the wrong cars!

Would they ever take a loss? They must have to sometimes, when they see the car value depreciating to lower than what they paid for it...

Comparing the asking price to what they paid for it they can leave them there for quite a while, most forecourt stock is there for a good lash of weeks, that's why trade in prices are so low, they are charging you in advance for the car sitting on the forecourt.

If it has been there two months I would say they would take a decent cash offer.

Wouldn't imagine so, they'll take what the car is worth alright but just because someone is offering "cash", it doesn't mean they'll automatically sell at a loss, either.

I know of a few cars sitting on dealer forecourts alot long than a couple of weeks!

If you are a cash buyer make an offer, leave your details, and see if they call and continue your search in the mean time

But they could decide to remove some of their px bargaining money for cash.

Not really, what happens if someone comes in with a trade in then and wants to trade in against the lower price?

Maybe or they could be way overpriced. When I was looking at cars recently, €4k-€7k, I would spot a car on the net in work. When I'd get a chance to call about it some would be gone some wouldn't. Whenever I went to look at the ones that where on sale for any length of time there was also something with them.

Garages regularly take a loss but try and avoid if possible. That's why they keep overpriced stock, better to have an over priced asset than a real loss.

I am having the same experience, but what is surprising me is that those which I saw about 2 months ago are still the same asking price; I thought they would have come down somewhat in price since then. I am going to keep an eye on them with some interest to see how long they last....

From what I have seen, if the car has been sitting there too long they will sell it at cost or at a small loss to another dealer/garage due to consumer warranty problems.

That makes absolutely no sense! LOL it'll just be the same problem for the next garage? If they can't sell it, they wait until it sells.

I've seen cars sit in some dealers for a couple of years. They become landmarks after a while.

Surely, they would just give them away for near to nothing at that stage

Nope their theory is someone will eventually come along that will cover the costs they are out. When they do admit defeat they will sell them off at action, rather than sell them off cheap locally, and get the name that if you wait long enough they will give them away. Car dealers cannot afford to have that rep.

Fairly sure they're all tied up in some sort of bankruptcy thingy from years ago and can't be touched.

It's always been the same for years.

I don't think it has to do with finance issues
