Switching to android from iOS in a week or two and will pick up the S2 as my first android phone.

Question regarding the sd card.....I plan on getting a 32Gb micro SD card on the cheap while I'm here in Bangkok. Any recommendations as to the best make to get? I presume some are quicker than others?

Can't wait to say goodluck to apple restrictions!

I'd say Sandisk is usually your best bet, Stay well away from Kingston as I have had loads of them come back to me when I used to supply them with phones! Also prob obvious but stay well clear of the no name brands for obvious reasons, May be sold less than 32gb and not know ya know ursmelf

Nice but doubt it would be compatible with current selection of smart phones.

Get something class 4 or better. The higher the class, the faster it is.

Class indicates faster for writing only, makes no difference for most people except when saving video. Just get the normal class 2 32gb micro-sdcard.

Cheers lads. One other question, if I bought an S2 out here in Bangkok, will it work back home? Sim free works out about €470 here. I asked a rep in a shop and he said yes, no problem. Just want to make sure it would though obv.

I've bought plenty of phones in Thailand over the years and they all worked here in Ireland. Once its sim-free you'll be fine.

I presume there would be no language restrictions either? Don't want to be left with not been able to change it to English.

Also would there be any 3G problems with picking up the phone in Thailand? Read something about different "bands" relating to 3G.

No language issues, the phones will all have an English language option, in fact I think in most cases it is set to English as a default. Never had any issues with 3G here (Ireland) on a Thai phone.

My new phone came from one of them mad places over there and it was set to english by default. No problems with 3g at all.

Only thing is, at €470 there's not a HUGE price difference with buying here (I think I'm right saying that?!) and if something goes wrong with the phone and you need to return it, you're kinda screwed.

Just something to keep in mind.

Was only thinking of that last night myself. Yeah, its a bit of a risk alright for the sake of a €100+

Sure I like abit of an auld gamble though ;)

Yeah, but you also have the freedom to choose your operator, not be tied into a contract, use abroad etc etc.

Just to be clear as well, I'll have no problems when I want to root the s2 I buy in Thailand I take it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 126 ✭✭meathgal2010

Samsungs Warranty is international for 24 months so if you buy in Thailand your covered here but will have to send it yourself to a repair centre in Ireland ..... unless you root it :o

oh and make sure you keep your receipts as this will be needed by the repair centre

Lads, went to pick up the S2 here in a samsung shop in Bangkok and the guy said it's sim free, but the 3G would not work in uk/Ireland????

The 3G specs on the box read:
    3G 900/2100 MHz
    3G 850/2100 MHz

Anyone shed some light on this asap as I won't get it if there's something nit adding up.

The staff didn't really speak great English so they may not have understood.

    Thanks

Did a check and the GSM 900/1900 2100 MHz band is the one I got. Same specs as my iPhone 4 GSM.

How do I go about getting my contacts from iPhone onto the S2?

Also, I need to send mass group SMS texts every week. Can you do this on the phone with the stock app or do I need to download one to do so?

Not too sure about iPhone contacts. I think you can export them as a CSV from iTunes and then import into Google.............I think

Group texts can be done with the stock app. Just create the group of contacts and you can select the group to send to

You can do it through outlook and a csv file or

    Sync your iphone with itunes
It asks you what do you want to sync it with and there is a drop down menu > select google mail > insert the gmail details you will be using with the gs2 > select sync

Then sign into your gs2 with that gmail account and make sure contacts sync is ticked and all your contacts will come down from googles server.;)

    Thankyou!

I've a few more android noob questions that I'll ask as I go in this thread if thats ok.

First one is regards "go launcher" - I seem to hear about these alot. What one can ye recommend for me to try out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭Knasher

Did you get your 3G sorted? It covers the right frequencies so it should work but if it doesn't automatically I'd guess it is missing the APN settings for your network and you just need to add them in yourself.

Launcher applications like Go, LauncherPro & ADW among others are replacements for your default home screen and app drawer. Some would come with different widgets, menu options & would be more customisable then the default TouchWiz(Samsung) or Sense(HTC) launchers.
Personally I use Go since its regularly updated and full of features but its all user preference

Tried this, but not working yet. In iTunes, I used sync contacts with "google contacts" and entered my gmail which I've set up on S2.

Then when I sync contacts on the S2 nothing gets pulled down??

I checked my gmail account on desktop and there's nothing on the contacts list on the left?

How do I download videos instead of streaming them on dolphin hd browser? Is it possible to download youtube videos as well?

Can anyone tell me how I go about finding out about making sure I've flash enabled as well on my browser?
