Boot-up endless loop

    Hi everyone

I have a dell inspiron 1740 (sorry but I do not know the spec without looking at the comp). Anyhow this morning i went away from the computer for a while and when i came back it had frozen. I tried different things but nothing would work, not even the on-off button so I unpluged it and plug it back on (it freezes often enough and I do this often enough). So when it went to boot up it goes into the first screen where it says "dell inspiron 1740" and then it goes into a black screen before booting up windows vista and... nothing. The actual machine goes back to the beginning and back onto the dell screen and back into the black screen and it never boots up or loads windows up. I have tried pressing f8 to go into safe mode but it doesn'T work. Only options I get is go into f2 for system set up or f12 for boot up options but i do not get the option of booting up in safe mode. I get the option of a few diagnostic test which I have all run to no avail. I also get the option to boot up from a cd, which I have tried, from the windows vista cd and it loads up some files and then it goes into the screen where it tries to load up vista and it stays stuck there for a long time, before going back to the black screen and back onto the beginning again.

What can I do? This happened before when a windows vista update was installed and i managed after a long time to get it back to the last working configuration but this time, it doesn'T seem to be working... help. I would love to recover all that there is in the HD, haven't done a backup in a long time :(
