A Connection Timeout Occured (Lion, Grrrr)

Can some help, i'm at the end of my tether with my Macbook Pro & My home wifi connection only. I've contacted Apple my ISP, changed reuters. I don't know where else to turn.
The Problem, the WIFI connection on the mac book either won't connect to WIFI (At the moment i'm using a time capsule with standard reuter feeding it interent, works no problem with cable but connection time out over wifi).

If I do manage to get connected the internet can be flying along and them time out after time out. Any ideas? MBPearly2011

I've tried with 3 different reuters and time capsule and all give the same problem, I don't have this problem with WIFI (well the odd drop out) anywhere else, just at home, I though the time capsule would solve the problem but no.
I'm so close to going back to windows it's not funny, i'm so sick of these stupid little apple quirks, surley they can make a laptop with wifi that works normally like any other laptop in the world.

Set the wifi on the time capsule to fixed channels. Otherwise the router will change channels if it gets interference.

Also if you have electrical devices nearby, try connecting to the 5GHz band.

Changing to the 5GHz band seems to have worked straight away after restarting the computer, the only devices on near by are a d-link router that has the wifi turned off on it which is feeding the time capsule, the tv and sky hd box and my phone which is sitting beside me.
Fingers crossed that's fixed it I was about to chuck it out the window. :)

Now my blackberry can't find the wireless network after changing to 5GHz, you just can't win:(:(, Why Apple, Why!!!:(

You should be able to set up dual band, have the blackberry connect to the other band.

If 5GHz works, then something is leaking interference nearby. Doesn't have to be close.

    How do you do this?

Edit: Sorry this is only done on time capsule. :o

Dual band routers are a lifesaver. I'm using 5Ghz for my MBP and it's solid even in an area saturated with other wifi networks with variations of UPC and Eircom as an SSID.

The internet/network is super snappy, thanks for the 5GHz, never used it before, doh!:)

Is it possible to get the capsule to transmit the 2.4 & 5Ghz at the same time as different networks or assign different name to the frequencies? (I think it's already doing that but the 2 bands have the one name)

Nothing else in the home is 5GHz compatible and if I set the time capsule to anything besides 5GHz only the mac won't see it or will see it and time out when you try and connect.
I've read the manual and googled a bit but can't see anywhere that says how to do it but sounds like people have done it, I can't find an option in the airport settings.

The simple thing would be to turn back on the wifi on the d-link and let the other devices connect to that but i'm sure the capsule can do it all.

It should be in the options of the time capsule/airport under wifi settings. You want to create a dual band, then have the 5GHz band have a different name. You need to be using a recent Airpot/Time capsule. The older versions don't have the option I think.

All things being equal (ie. interference) 5GHz does not increase your wifi speed. Instead it puts it in a frequency range that doesn't get whacked by every day devices. It makes the range a bit smaller as well, but is fine for household access.

The drop in range is acceptable all right, although I do connect at higher speeds using 5Ghz. Around 450 Mbps vs 250 Mbps and transfer rates from my NAS echo that.

    It's a 1st Generation time capsule:(

Time for an upgrade! 2TB & 3TB available. I am sure you can resell the old one easy enough.

I thought I was the only one!

I have a brand new 13" 2011 Macbook Pro and I cannot get a continuous connection to my Wireless router (Eircom Netopia Wireless Router, ~2 years old). My old 13" Macbook can connect just fine IF my new Macbook is turned off. If both are on, and the new Macbook loses the connection then the old 13" will also lose the connection. So I'm guessing it is definitely something to do with the frequencies as the new model knocks it out for both computers...

How do I change the frequency I am on from 2.4GHz to 5GHz (or whatever)? I know how to change the channel I'm on (channels 1 - 11), but that's all.

Any help on this would be great, as I'm ready to throw the Macbook Pro out the window!

You can't do it with an eircom router, you need one that supports 5GHz most are only 2.4GHz, i'm using a time capsule but even that isn't modern enough. It's extremely frustrating and a massive fup up by apple on such expensive machines.

I don't need the extra storage space but..

Were running 2 imac's in one location, mac mini & another iMac in another location and 2 mac book pro's, currently backing them all up independently, is it possible with these new time capsules to back them all up over the internet from different locations with the one capsule? cheers

Grrrr, called apple, now hate apple.

My 90day free support has finished so if I want them to troubleshoot it I have to pay, they won't collect it and won't support me. They've told me I can take it to an authorised service center but when they reinstall the OS and if the problem isn't there I also have to pay for that.
This is a less than 4mt old i7, Quad Core that cost an arm and a leg. I can see this going one way and that's the small claims court. You shouldn't need to reinstall the OS to get the WiFI working but from talking to the chap on the phone this is the first thing the repair company will do.:mad::mad::mad:I'm livid.

Sorry forgot to add i'm now having problems with 2.4GHz everywhere.

Where have they acknowledged it, any link? The guy on the phone seemed to think it was a software issue (without performing any trouble shooting)that will be resolved when they wipe the mac clean and charge me for the pleasure, all while the machine is within warranty.

bs wiping the mac aint gonna do anything, im on 10.6 and i have the same issues.

im not going digger through forums for you, find it yourself

apple support, macforums, macworld. they are several specific to macs

I know wiping it won't fix it the same as you.

I don't believe they have acknowledged it or the guy in tech support would have said we know there's a problem and are working on a fix, hence looking for a link from apple where they admitted there's a problem so I can throw it back up to them.

Of course i'm angry, the laptop was close to 2.5k not to mention that I have a fully mac network running the business and to be fobbed off with bullcrap support like that is unacceptable.
I'll get back to them tomorrow but am expecting them to advise me there working on a fix and not make me run around like a fool getting someone to wipe the computer, if they won't i'll request they take it back and refund me or next step the small claims court.

yep same here dude but im happy, its not as bad as it was after a recent update and while issues happen and it sucks, thats life.

indeed if you really want to get your money back, id try that route

again the apple support forums have all the evidence you require, jsut look for it

I haven't tried over the internet. I guess you would need to set up NAT and a dynamic IP.

Currently I have 5 machines running off the one time capsule. The initial backup takes a while, so I ran one at a time. After that there is no notice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 313 ✭✭D_D

I have no idea how, but my WiFi connection troubles seem to have sorted themselves out. I have tried everything in pretty much everyone's forum, so I have no idea which particular thing worked. I also installed the SMC 2.2 update (I thought I had done this, but I think I needed to have the Macbook Pro plugged in for it to take effect).

So once I restarted my computer, it hasn't lost or faltered once. Good times!

I put my MBP onto the 2.4GHz band last night to see if I could reproduce the OPs problem but didn't have any timeouts at all.

    Running a 15" Early 2011 MBP on 10.7.0. My router is a Linksys e4200.
