Doesn't one come pre-installed on the laptop? What are your laptops specs?

Well you can't buy XP anymore so you are better off going the Windows 7 route. Most Ebay Windows XP licenses are dodgy (Or expiring MSDN copies) and as Microsoft stopped distributing it don't waste your time looking for it!

Pick up a windows 7 OEM copy, cheaper but note that the license will be tied to the new laptop, so if the laptop motherboard were to break, you couldn't legally change it, licenses for any windows OS on ebay are dodgy, buy windows 7 from somewhere like Dabs, Elara etc. Home Premium is good to go for, also I think http://www.software4students.ie/ does cheap licenses, if you have a valid student email address

It's not a difficult decision. Windows XP is no longer available, Windows Vista is an unmitigated disaster and comparatively Windows 7 is a joy to work with.

7 without question is the only real option.

It will be supported until 2014 by Microsoft. Regardless 7 is the way to go.
