How to set up catering van business?

    Hey,

I'm interested in a food catering van business (take away).

What exactly is needed for such a business?

I know the van requires the HSE approval, but what else is needed?

Do I need insurance to insure the people who buy the food? Do I need to collect VAT? Do I need to pay taxes? Etc.

Picking a van that's HSE approved is easy from ads, but what happens from there on?

    Thanks in advance.

Have you done the math on this venture? How much revenue are you expecting in Year 1? How much profit do you expect to make?

You sound very inexperienced and naiive in this area. You need to get formal training and advice. Have you considered attending a FAS course on setting up your own business? Have you any culinary training? There is a lot of regulation around food preparation and sale and you sound like you are a million miles from knowing what you are doing

+1 Asking questions like 'Do I need insurance to insure the people who buy the food?' & 'do I need to collect VAT' says that you are a very long way from being ready to launch your own business.

Talk to FAS and do a 'setting up your own business' course. You will also need to undertake training in food hygiene and preparation in order to pass muster with the local environmental health inspectors, otherwise they will close you down on their first inspection.

Do you need insurance? Yes, otherwise one case of food poisoning and one ambulance-chasing lawyer will put you out of business.

Do you need to collect VAT? Yes, takeaway food is liable for VAT.
