Running 16 bit application on win 7 x64.

    Is it possible for me to run a 16bit program on a cd on win 7 x64 using a virtualbox or vmware?

    you can also use virtualpc 2007

    or if it's a really old app try dosbox http://www.dosbox.com/

    BUT you have to install an operating system in the virtual machine, which means you need a separate license for it. ( FreeDos is free, again for very old apps - Wine on ubuntu might work for some old undemanding programs, ymmv)


    This is the one big advantage of the premium / enterprise version of windows 7, you can run XP mode without needing an extra license, and then in XP you can set the app compatibilty mode to older versions of windows.

    Thanks a lot for the help, i'll give that a try. Hope it dosent just replicate the run in xp mode feature.

    I've home premium here, I tried running it in win 2000 mode but there was no joy, when I click the .exe i get the UAC pop up, a process called setup starts but nothing happens.

    The program is meant to run on win 95/98..It came with a book published in 2005... :(

    clues maybe ?
    chances are that similar apps exist today

    2005 ! ,
    NT was released 12 years earlier so they've no excuse

    wine might be an option then , maybe
