Just found out today that condoms arent much use for protection from AID's...  and I guess it wouldnt be much for the crabs either... :D But just wondering, apart from AID's, is there anything else that a condom wont protect you from?

If used correctly condoms will protect you from hiv and Aids. Most times when condoms do not work is down to human error rather than faulty condoms. Condoms will not protect you from crabs or genital warts because they are through skin contact.

From a mate who had ONS and is paranoid as hell (although he didnt use any protection) but hes being on google all day reading up about it.

Sorry just after re-asking him... he said, its non latex condoms arent safe. The virus is so small it passes through them. what does this mean for Durex? Am I safe?

For your information OP (and anyone else who was under this impression)

    http://www.who.int/hiv/topics/condoms/en/
Condoms, when used correctly and consistently, are highly effective in preventing HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). A large body of scientific evidence shows that male latex condoms have an 80% or greater protective effect against the sexual transmission of HIV and other STIs.

Condoms are a key component of comprehensive HIV prevention. WHO supports a combination of approaches to prevent the sexual transmission of HIV, including correct and consistent condom use, reduction in the number of sexual partners, HIV testing and counselling, delaying sexual debut, treatment for STIs and male circumcision. In 2009, 2.6 million people were newly infected with HIV.

WHO works with its key partners in HIV prevention, in particular UNFPA and UNAIDS, to define global policy standards and support countries in condom procurement, quality assurance, promotion and distribution.

I don't have the figures to hand, but there isn't a huge difference tbh. There is a difference though. Most condoms are latex though

So you have 20% (give or take) risk from AID's using a condom.

Ok, is there any other STD's that your not fully protected against with a condom?

Also, probably a dumb question, but wouldnt the condom makers not try and cash in on this and maybe make a thicker or denser condom or something that gives even more protection then say your regular one?

    no... you have
80% or greater protective effect against the sexual transmission of HIV and other STIs.
    when using a condom

Condoms don't really protect against STDs that can be transmitted from the outside, if that makes sense. Crabs being a good example, as they live in the pubic hair, so can hop across regardless. You get me?

crabs, warts, hpv, molluscum contagiosum for a start. but you also have to take into consideration non-penetrative sex acts. if you have chlamydia and you touch yourself and your partner etc.
also, i think it's fair to say most people don't use condoms for oral sex, and lots of STIs like herpes, gonorhhea and syphilis can all be contracted.

First question has already been answered.

Second question, ever heard of Durex Extra-Safe?

i suppose the bottom line Damo is that if you use a condom you are going to be pretty well protected against a lot of things. There are some other infections that other than not having sex, there is little enough protection against. All that said, most STI's are easy enough to treat.

Totally no need for your mate to be freaking out. get him to read this thread :)

Google is your friend, as are any family planning practices or clinics. Yahoo answers is not your friend. If in doubt get up to St. James' clinic its free.

Condoms are pure anti-banter but sure its better than your knob falling off!
