Travelling to athletics events?

Just curious, of the posters here, how many of you would travel to athletics events, either locally or internationally and do you travel by yourself or with others?

The only event I have been to was the Nationals in Santry a few weeks ago and I went by myself. A friend was competing in the 10,000m but I didn't really get to speak to him or anything.

I was meant to go to the Diamond League meeting in Rome but had to cancel that but again, I would have been going on my own. I seem to specialise in liking stuff that none of my friends are into!

Just wondering how many others here travel to athletics events who do they go with, if anyone?

I travel to events all the time. I'm usually on my own because I don't mind that and sometimes its just easier than dragging someone along for company. People at events are friendly and I've never really felt lonely or isolated. The actual travelling is never a problem if you plan and know where you are supposed to be.

    Good idea.

I travelled to Barca originally on my own but a couple of others from boards then decided to come over so was never on my own. But for Daegu I went over on my own and it was never a problem. In my hostel most of the people were over for the championships: Aussies (the chap who came 6th in the world champs long jump 1991 was there), Belgians, Estonians, Dutch, Americans, English, French. We all chatted athletics every night and regularly went down to the bars nearby for some brews. I went to the athletics most evenings with the americans (painful at times given they won so many medals). Its no different to any sort of travel. If you're sociable you'll meet lots of people with similar interests.

It would have been nice to have met a few Irish out there that were as passionate about the sport as myself, but Daegu was a long way to travel so there wasn't very many Irish there (barring those living in Korea to teach English). But in Barcelona there was loads of Irish there.

I know what you mean about friends not being interested in what you are in to. Was the same for me, as most of my mates couldn't give a flying toss about athletics, but now I've made more friends who are interesed in athletics, simply from going to events. Same here in Oz, have met people through my club who like to talk athletics.

If you want to go to a meet or championships just do it. Nothing wrong with going solo anyway.

Yeah, I reckon I will need to head to events by myself. Perhaps it's for the best as these days I don't always be mad into the idea of drinking and everything. Sometimes I prefer to just do my own thing.

Although I rarely stay in hostels these days I find!

Always go with my younger brother and sometimes my older brother too. We're all mad athletics fans. We usually have some hefty bets on that pay for the trip :p

Will be going to a diamond league or 2 next year as well as one of the nights of the big athletics event in Stratford :)

Usually on my own. This year I went to a marathon in Holland and one in Rome on my own. The good thing about travelling to these events, if you are travelling on your own anyway, is that for a period you will be mixing and talking with like minded people and new friendships may form with people you may never have met anyway. I really like the social aspect of it especially when travelling abroad.

This is a good idea, I'm goin to make it a priority to go to some of the big athletics champs over the next couple of years (probably after London Olympics). Not sure if I know anyone who'd be up for it, but that won't be a problem for me. The next few years should see the Irish fans with plenty to cheer about making it even more essential I make it to some of the champs.

There are lots of events on in Ireland that often produce the goods. You mentioned that you went the the nationals this year, The National indoors will be on in February (Odyssey in Belfast last few years, maybe not next year!!), Provincial championships, National juvenile and senior champs, schools provencial and national championships to name a few. Then there are cross country and roads events. Look at the AAI fixture list, support your local events and save yourself a lot of money.

On top of this the quality in some of the graded meets this year has dramatically improved. Maybe its to do with the recession but people seemed to chase times alot more at home this year. Free in to these events also.

Having said that I like the idea of th supporters club and thing its a great idea. Was over at the World XCs this year was a great atmosphere and could crowd of us travelled to it
