Missing highly sensitive file all of a sudden lands back on the desk

    Had a serious enough incident in work of late. Very important HR file with confidential & sensitive info went missing. The file was not in my charge at the time it went missing but because I am involved in signing off part I was quizzed several times as to its whereabouts. I searched high and low just in case but knew fine well it was out of my hands. I had an idea where it could be i.e. dizzy executive in charge who was trying to blame me for losing it.

    Dizzy went on holidays and the next afternoon it lands on the boss’s desk. The only way it could have got there was if she had found it and handed it to an accomplice whom is a senior person in the company (if I am guessing right) using the holiday as an alibi.

    I am suspected now of sneaking it back on the desk which really pisses me off. The boss doesn’t see the big deal but that’s cause she’s wants to keep her head in the sand.

    What do I do? The Dizzy lady is back from holidays at the end of next week, how do I get her to come clean so we can continue to work without contention and I don’t fester?

    Leave a note written in blood on her desk saying "i know what you did last summer" that should sort it out for all parties

    Glue her pc mouse to her desk. Dismantle her chair before she comes back. Go onto her pc and search for a porn video on the internet, turn the volume up very loud then press play but before it plays put the computer on sleep mode, so when she turns it back on.... etc...

    Can you show where you were at the time the file was supposed to have gone missing?
    If you can show you were elsewhere or doing something else completely at 'loss time' then you might stand a better chance of been seen as not responsible or as not as much so?

    if the boss doesnt care, then you shouldnt.

    consullt the b1tch in private, ask whats her problem, tell her whats what and leave it at that.

    take random items from herr and place them on her desk a week later, start small, pens, family photos etc... keep it up until she is so overcome with guilt that she confesses.

    And your first thought was to post about this sensitive issue on the internet and conduct an informal poll of what other people would do ?

    I wouldn't keep quiet on this was as the future implications may create further problems for your employer particularly as this is a HR related issue. I would be extremely concerned at who had access to the file, is there information missing and what could be the future implications if the information were to be used either for or against you/the employer in future.

    I'm slightly confused from reading your post!! so not sure if I can help!

    If you are responsible for the actions of ''dizzy'' though she may have made the mistake or being in charge of the file at the time. They may go directly to you if your responsible for driving safe guarding of files and implementing practice/procedures within your working environment. Was the individual involved capable or understood fully the implications of the sensitive nature of the file and future implications? I would certainly question how did this just ''disappear'' and eventually turn up.


    If you are not directly responsible for the actions of ''dizzy'' then I would certainly highlight (without getting angered or disgruntled!) this directly with ''dizzy'' what happened? She also has a responsibility to her role and if she is not doing her job as she should I would have some concerns over this particularly in future as its likely to infringe on trust again of course if there is a responsibility on you to manage her well you could face another future situation.

    If your boss genuinely doesn't care, maybe let it slide and try and snare her further down the line when she thinks she's hot away with it.

    Third possibility - your boss 'doesnt really care about it' because she had it all along while going around saying it was missing. Now looking to save face.

    Otherwise, you have truth on your side, lies would involve higher and higher stakes.
    Let it be known to dizzy that your willing to up the stakes. Or that the stakes are increasing without her knowledge.
