Just got my first interface with pro tools and I'm finding it a bit overwhelming! Anyone know of any basic guides for someone with next to zero experience?

    was that really necessary?

because god know what setup he has, what software/hardware..

and this question is asked about 5 times a day on most other recording blogs, easier for people to help themselves then for us to guess what interface he has, and what os, set up blah blah blah.

amazing what can be learned by googleing, youtube, and so on

I'm sure he knows how to plug in a piece of hardware, he can probably also tell the difference between a mic input and jack input. Presumably, he wants a bit of help with protools.

and a youtube video, or a guide from a protools forum would probably be best, no point in spitting out the same info again and again when someones done it best before eh?

when you search on google or youtube, for every helfpul link, there are 10 bad ones, as there are loads of people on youtube that "think" they know how to play guitar/drums/bass/keys/record..... and make videos/blogs which are terrible, but a novice is not going to know how bad it actually is.

if I may give an example, I just googled "marshall mg review"
first review on the first link gives a score of 10/10, when this is not the case!
    http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/reviews/guitar_amplifiers/marshall/mg100dfx/index.html

Google does have the answer to nearly everything, but its not always the correct answer!

so what makes you think youll give the best answer then?

nothing. but point to links/vids that you know are helpful and not misleading

indeed because if the OP took an extra 5 minutes to search he could have found the answers himself..

    ANYWAY indeed off topic

Protools forum, soundonsound forum, and if he can give us more input into what he cant do, hardware, software, and music style im sure we can point him in a better direction

Appreciate the advice - and I can assure you, I did google and youtube (although perhaps not as extensively as I could). I found a number of outdated videos, many of which assumed - for my level at least - just a bit too much prior knowledge. I dont yet have a sufficient knowledge base to distinguish helpful from unhelpful guides - I'm also swamped with work, so I just didn't have the time to sit through multiple videos.

Assuming there may have been others once in the same position, I posted the opening question - although as you say, I could have been more specific.

It's a mind numbing massive area to get into :) and the responses above were correct, you need to be a bit more specific to get the most from posts..

My suggestion is to play with your setup for a bit.. then post on specifics that you are confused/having problems with (no matter how basic the question seems). People will be in a far better position to give advice etc. then..

The main thing is to have fun.. and not get bogged down or stressed with the barriers you hit... post the problem and people will help (for more technical recording issues the Music Production forum is great also)...

    Just have fun :)

... and BTW... everyone else was in that position previously :) and most of us still are :)
